Meta-Rules

An agent s default personality may be augmented by a set of meta-rules that tell it how to alter its default personality according to various environmental conditions and contexts. The three simplest meta-rule classes define the local conditions under 

Other meta-rule classes include retreat, pursuit, support and hold position. A global rule set determines combat attrition, commimicatioii, reconstitution, and reinforcement, 

This basic combat logic may be enhanced by three additional functions (1) defense, which adds a notional ability to agents to be able to withstand a greater number of hits before having their state degraded, (2) reconstitution, which adds a provision for previously injured agents to be reconstituted to their alive state, and (3) fratricide ( or friendly fire), which adds an element of realism to ISAAC combat by making it possible to inadvertently hit friendly forces.

In the general case several rules may be applicable in a given situation. This may lead to a conflict which has to be resolved. An expert system will therefore need rules deciding about which rules shall be applied in which sequence. Thus, we need a priority scheme for rules. This means that in addition to rules about objects, there will be rules about rules, i.e. meta-rules. 

The meta-term expressing a meta-level sentence is a term Pred(Sub,Obj) (or its negation) or Pred(Prop) (or its negation) or a logical-connective function symbol applied to the tuple of these terms. Let all meta-variables appearing in the metalevel sentence be universally quantified. One form of the sentence is a Hom-clause meta-rule, e.g.

The ontology-based approach for modeling the functional and geometrical design models allowed to define meta-rules that constrain correct models, and which can be checked at model building time. For example, certain types of components cannot be connected together in a functional model. This type of constraint can be easily formulated as an axiom in the functional ontology.
