The determination of silicon is commonly encountered in metallurgical and mining laboratories responsible for the analysis of ores, slags, and alloys. The volatilization gravimetric method, which is appropriate for samples containing high concentrations of silicon, was described earlier in Method 8.2. [Pg.259]

The most widely used method of analysis for methylene chloride is gas chromatography. A capillary column medium that does a very good job in separating most chlorinated hydrocarbons is methyl silicone or methyl (5% phenyl) silicone. The detector of choice is a flame ionization detector. Typical molar response factors for the chlorinated methanes ate methyl chloride, 2.05 methylene chloride, 2.2 chloroform, 2.8 and carbon tetrachloride, 3.1, where methane is defined as having a molar response factor of 2.00. Most two-carbon chlorinated hydrocarbons have a molar response factor of about 1.0 on the same basis. [Pg.520]

Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell This type of fuel cell was developed in response to the industiy s desire to expand the natural-gas market. The electrolyte is 93 to 98 percent phosphoric acid contained in a matrix of silicon carbide. The electrodes consist of finely divided platinum or platinum alloys supported on carbon black and bonded with PTFE latex. The latter provides enough hydrophobicity to the electrodes to prevent flooding of the structure by the electrolyte. The carbon support of the air elec trode is specially formulated for oxidation resistance at 473 K (392°F) in air and positive potentials. [Pg.2412]

For a given amplitude of the quasi-elastic release wave, the more the release wave approaches the ideal elastic-plastic response the greater the strength at pressure of the material. The lack of an ideally elastic-plastic release wave in copper appears to suggest a limited reversal component, however, this is much less than in the silicon bronze. Collectively, the differences in wave profiles between these two materials are consistent with a micro-structurally controlled Bauschinger component as supported by the shock-recovery results. Silane coupling agents may contribute hydrophilic properties to the interface, especially when amino functional silanes, such as epoxies and urethane silanes, are used as primers for reactive polymers. The primer may supply much more amine functionality than can possibly react with the resin at the interphase. Those amines that could not react are hydrophilic and, therefore, responsible for the poor water resistance of bonds. An effective way to use hydrophilic silanes is to blend them with hydrophobic silanes such as phenyltrimethoxysilane. Mixed siloxane primers also have an improved thermal stability, which is typical for aromatic silicones [42]. [Pg.796]

The presence of active sulphate-reducing bacteria usually results in graphitic corrosion and this has led to a useful method of diagnosing this cause of corrosion. The leaching out of iron from the graphitic residue which is responsible for the characteristic appearance of this type of corrosion leads to an enriched carbon, silicon and phosphorus content in the residue as compared with the original content of these elements in the cast iron.
