Table 9-4 shows the solvent and the amount of solvent used in the extraction, the concentration of lindane and the resulting recovery rates. 

Table 9-4 shows that the recovery rate is dependent both on the solvent and on the amount of solvent used. For a low concentration, in our example 10 pg lindane/3 ml blood, 15 ml solvent is quite sufficient. However, if 100 pg lindane is present, the resulting recovery rate is poorer, and a larger amount of solvent is therefore used. As the concentration is unknown in real samples, 30 ml solvent should always be used in order to be able to reproducibly determine higher concentrations also. 

Once the time of exposure and laboratory recovery studies are completed, storage stability should be determined. Although a separate experiment Is possible, the simple expedient of storing one or two fortified pads with each worker s pad set will determine storage stability as extraction and analyses proceed. The resulting recoveries also serve as a check on the accuracy of laboratory technical help. The required number of these fortified pads depends on the size of the experiment. The criterion Is to allow for enough measurements to statistically validate the quality of both storage and extraction. He use a minimum of three fortified pads per exposure day.

Since hexane has a very mild odour, it is difficult to recover it with a smell as good as virgin material. As a result, recovery is usually done in-house and seldom by merchant recoverers, who have difficulty in finding customers.

Favor Sequences that Recover the Most VaUuAle Species as a Distillate Product. By forcing the product away from the bulk stream, higher purities generally will result. Recovery as a distillate product is desirable l ause it avoids the higher temperatures present in the reboiler which could lead to degradation. 

In benzbromarone-treated rats, total (83 and 88 %) and direct (67 and 71 %) recoveries after early and late proximal injections were significantly higher than in control rats (P < 0.001).
