Piezoelectric resonator

Chemical sensors for gas molecules may, in principle, monitor physisorp-tion, chemisorption, surface defects, grain boundaries or bulk defect reactions [40]. Several chemical sensors are available mass-sensitive sensors, conducting polymers and semiconductors. Mass-sensitive sensors include quartz resonators, piezoelectric sensors or surface acoustic wave sensors [41-43]. The basis is a quartz resonator coated with a sensing membrane which works as a chemical sensor. [Pg.200]

Ferroelectric and piezoelectric ceramics, in particular, play an ever-increasing role as materials for electrical and electronic applications that include multilayer capacitors (MLCs), bypass capacitors, dielectric resonators for frequency stabilization of microwave circuits, low-noise oscillators and low-insertion loss bandpass filters for microwave communication components, dielectric waveguide resonators, piezoelectric transducers and sensors, piezomechanical actuators and motors,... [Pg.259]

Fokker Bond Tester. An ultrasonic inspection technique commonly used for aircraft structures is based on ultrasonic spectroscopy [2]. Commercially available instruments (bond testers) used for this test operate on the principle of mechanical resonance in a multi-layer structure. A piezoelectric probe shown in Figure 3b, excited by a variable frequency sine signal is placed on the surface of the inspected structure. A frequency spectrum in the range of some tens of kHz to several MHz is acquired by the instrument, see Figure 3a. [Pg.108]

Bulk-wave piezoelectric quartz crystal sensors indirecdy measure mass changes of the coating on the surface of the sensing device. This change in mass causes changes in the resonant frequency of the device, and measurements ate based on frequency differences. [Pg.396]

Zirconate compounds exhibit several interesting properties. Lead zirconate—titanate [12626-81 -2] compositions display piezoelectric properties which are utilized in the production of EM-coupled mode filters, resonators in microprocessor clocks, photoflash actuators, phonograph cartridges, gas... [Pg.432]

Piezoelectric fans are small, low-power, relatively low-noise, solid-state devices that provide viable thermal management solutions for a variety of portable electronic appliances, including laptop computers and cellular phones. In these fans piezoceramic patches are bonded onto thin, low-frequency flexible blades driven at resonance frequency, thereby creating an air stream directed at the electronics components. Thereby, up to 100% improvement over natural convective heat transfer can be achieved (Acikalin et al. 2004). [Pg.10]

The major piezoelectric applications are sensors (pickups, keyboards, microphones, etc.), electromechanical transducers (actuators, vibrators, etc ), signal devices, and surface acoustic wave devices (resonators, traps, filters, etc ). Typical materials are ZnO, AIN, PbTiOg, LiTaOg, and Pb(Zr.Ti)03 (PZT). [Pg.400]

A number of studies (Kristoff and Guilbault 1983 Milanko et al. 1992) have investigated the use of coated and uncoated piezoelectric crystals in the detection and analysis of diisopropyl methylphosphonate in air samples. Piezoelectric crystals have a natural resonant frequency of oscillation that can be utilized to detect... [Pg.132]

The principle of operation of a quartz balance can be easily described if an AC potential is placed across a quartz piezoelectric crystal, the crystal will oscillate spatially and the amplitude of this oscillation is greatest at the resonance frequency of the crystal. This resonance frequency, /0, is a function of several parameters, including the mass of the crystal, and the mass of foreign material placed on the crystal. In fact, the change in the resonance frequency, A/0, on placing some foreign material on it is given approximately... [Pg.210]
