Welding resistance

Low carbon steels commonly, however, almost any material combination can be welded using conventional resistance welding techniques. Not recommended for cast iron, low melting point metals and high carbon steels. 

Electroslag Welding (ESW) is used to weld carbon and low alloy steels typically. Nickel, copper and stainless steel less common.

A Russian ammonia pipeline of nearly 2400 km extends from Togliatti on the Volga River to the Port of Odessa on the Black Sea, and a 2200-km, 250-mm dia branch line extends from Godovka in the Ukraine to Panioutino. The pipeline is constmcted of electric-resistance welded steel pipe with 7.9-mm thick walls but uses seamless pipe with 12.7-mm thick walls for river crossings. The pipeline is primed and taped with two layers of polyethylene tape and suppHed with a cathodic protection system for the entire pipeline. Mainline operating pressure is 8.15 MPa (1182 psi) and branch-line operating pressure is 9.7 MPa (1406 psi) (11). 

Tips of platinum, platinum—nickel alloy, or iridium can be resistance-welded to spark-plug electrodes for improved reHabiHty and increased lifetime. These electrodes are exposed to extremely hostile environments involving spark erosion, high temperature corrosion, thermal shock, and thermal fatigue. 

Resistance welding has been successfully appHed to copper alloys in all of its various spot, seam, or butt joining modes. Because the process depends on ohmic (l R) heating at the interface to be joined, the abiHty to resistance weld is inversely related to electrical conductivity of the alloys being welded. 

Noble Metal Weldments. Noble metal contact buttons, TS—l h p.m thick, are made by resistance welding a rod of the material to the substrate, which usually is a contact spring, and by cutting the rod and forming the button to the desired shape. Pure gold and gold—silver alloys are the most commonly used metals.

Resistance welding Spot and seam welding are used to join molybdenum for electronic use this technique is not satisfactory for large-scale work. 

It can be welded by resistance, tungsten-inert gas (TIG), plasma arc and electron beam techniques. To protect the metal from attack by air, resistance welding is carried out under water and the TIG method is best performed in a chamber of argon. The latter three methods produce ductile welds that equal the base metal in most of its characteristics. 

The corrosion of stainless steel welds has probably been studied more fully than any other form of joint corrosion and the field has been well reviewed by Pinnow and Moskowitz , whilst extensive interest is currently being shown by workers at The Welding Institute. Satisfactory corrosion resistance for a well-defined application is not impossible when the austenitic and other types of stainless steels are fusion or resistance welded in fact, tolerable properties are more regularly obtained than might be envisaged. The main problems that might be encountered are weld decay, knifeline attack and stress-corrosion cracking (Fig. 9.29). 

Recently, attention has been directed to a study of the problem of grooving corrosion in line-pipe steel welded by high frequency induction or electric resistance welding.
