Resignation

Ohl demonstrated his results to Kelly early in 1940 Kelly felt that his instincts had been proved justified. Thereupon, Bell Labs had to focus single-mindedly on radar and on silicon rectifiers for this purpose. It was not till 1945 that basic research restarted. This was the year that the theorist John Bardeen was recruited, and he in due course became inseparable from Walter Brattain, an older man and a fine experimenter who had been with Bell since the late 1920s. William Shockley formed the third member of the triumvirate, though from an early stage he and Bardeen found themselves so mutually antagonistic that Bardeen was sometimes close to resignation. But tension can be productive as well as depressing. 

Carnot soon realized that he did not have the temperament of a soldier and in 1818 left the army. After leaving the army Carnot took up residence in his father s former Paris apartment, and was presumably supported by his family whiile he attended classes at Sorbonne, the College de France, and the Conservatoire des Arts et Metiers. He also frequently visited factories and workshops, both to see steam engines actually in use, and to learn more about the economics of such industrial use of energy. There were rumors that he did at least on a lew occasions receive some consultant s fees for his advise, but there was no clear documentary evidence of this. In 1827 he returned to active militaiy seiwice with the rank of captain, but this lasted only a little more than a year. He resigned in 1828 and died of cholera four years later in Paris. 

Richard Willstatter 11872-19421 was born in Karlsruhe, Germany, and obtained his Ph.D. from the Technische Hochschule, Munich (18951. He was professor ol chemistry at the universities of Zurich, Berlin, and then Munich (1916-1924). In 1915, he won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work on elucidating the structure of chlorophyll. Nevertheless, as a Jew, he was subjected to anti-Semitic pressure that caused him to resign his position at Munich in 1924. He continued to work privately. 

This Inspiring teacher and tireless experimenter was so deeply concerned over social issues that he resigned his professorship rather than obey an order to cease interfering with affairs of government. He made enemies by supporting liberal movements and even defied the Czar s wishes by refusing to cut lus hair. Nevertheless, he won the appointment as Director of the Bureau of Weights and Measures. 

The Dirty Jane is a gimmick, and it is also a great cocktail. (I ve put my resignation in a sealed envelope to be opened upon this recommendation.) Part martini, part deli sandwich, it is a vodka martini, no vermouth, with a wedge of pickled green tomato instead of an olive. A splash of the pickle brine makes it dirty, as a splash of olive brine would make it a straight dirty martini. The drink itself is a clear liquid.

German newspapers announced that Haber had resigned for health reasons, but he quickly distributed copies of his letter to counteract the lie. Within two years, one in five German university scientists lost their jobs, 80 percent of them were Jews. Warned that he was destroying German science, the Fuhrer fell into rages. 

By the time Haber died, Otto Hahn, acting as provisional director of his institute, had carried out the orders that Haber had resigned over. A Nazi Party member became the institute s director and, in the subsequent Nazi takeover, no other institute of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society suffered as severely as Haber s. The military planned to make the institute a center for poison gas research, and former staff members were not needed. 

The first volume of this series continues, with a somewhat modified title, the previous series founded in 1961 by Paul Delahay and Charles W Tobias under the name Ad vances in Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Engineering Thirteen volumes of this series have appeared in irregular sequence. The aim was to publish authoritative reviews in the area of electrochemical phenomena and to bridge the gap between electrochemistry as part of physical chemistry and electrochemical engineering as stated in the first issue of the previous series by the editors. After the resignation of Paul Delahay in 1976, Heinz Gerischer took over his responsibilities as editor. 

Pauley got back from his conference a half-hour later. He was shaking his head. "I can t believe it," he said. "This is getting to be pretty serious. As soon as I walked into the room General Clay said, I m resigning. "... 

Pauley explained that for some time after he d entered, Clay had been literally shaking and kept repeating, "I m resigning. Either I m the boss in Germany or I m not."... 

Clay never did officially admit our authority, nor did he resign. Pauley sensed this at the time and telephoned Bennett to "go ahead anyway unless they stop you."... 

My four-month tenure was drawing to an end. If I resigned now it would mean a fatal administrative interruption. That s what 1 told myself, anyway. Twice within a week, Telford Taylor s office telephoned to detail the problem in dollars and cents.
