Several aspects of the problem of herbicides being contaminated with nitrosamines, and the resulting inadvertent introduction of nitrosamines into the environment, will be discussed in other papers in this symposium. Unrecognized until less than five years ago, the situation has inspired intense debate and prompted several of the environmental chemistry studies mentioned in this paper. Like the presumed threat from the in vivo nitros-ation of pesticide residues, discussions sometimes lack the type of anticipated dose and effect calculations just mentioned. Unlike the active ingredients, whose benefits can justify residue tolerances and acceptable daily intakes, nitrosamine contaminents afford no known benefits, and the desirability of minimizing their levels is undisputed. [Pg.351]

The residuals discussed thus far have been associated with some dependent variable, such as the reaction rate r. It is particularly advantageous in pinpointing the type of defect present in an inadequate model to expand this definition to include parametric residuals. To prepare the oxidized form of MDH, the isolated preparation has to be treated with electron acceptor in order to remove substrate and finally to oxidize the enzyme. An apparent systematic error may be due to an erroneous value of one or both of the pure-component vapor pressures as discussed by several authors (Van Ness et al., 1973 Fabries and Renon, 1975 Abbott and Van Ness, 1977). Once the liquid has been vaporized prior to introduction of residual sample into the plasma flame, any nonvolatile impurities in the liquid will have been mixed with the sample itself, and these impurities will appear in the results of analysis.
