Research data management, packaged

Early scientific software packages focused on compilers, individual applications, and specific aspects of computer support such as statistics. More recently, software packages provide a broad, integrated, easy to use, and extensible set of capabilities to support research data management. RS/1 (TM) is described as an example of modern scientific software. 

BBN took a more systematic approach than had been used in the development of earlier software packages for the scientific market the company s goal from the start of the development process was to design an integrated general purpose package to provide broad-based interactive support for research data management. The result was RS/1. 

Due to its spreadsheet approach, ProjectLeader inherently organizes the data. Additional tools that make it a complete research-project management package are at present included only in the Macintosh version, and include full tracking and annotation mechanisms, the possibility to produce scatter graphs, and the integration of data tables, graphs, and documentation.

Local health data are translated into information and knowledge utilized for an application. Health data are analyzed for many different reasons in order to support clinical, management, and policy decision making at various levels within the health system. Data analysis is achieved in a variety of ways, as the different types of data require different analytic methods appropriate to the form of the data and to the research question. There are numerous software packages that support all stages of healfh data analysis and facilitate presentation and dissemination of the results. 

As the objective of the study was to explore and document the error management strategies used by expert pilots, in order to inform the syllabus and ciuriculum structure of an error management training package, the analysis of interview data was undertaken with explicit reference to the interpretive research design. Accordingly, the study did not seek to test pre-defined hypotheses or adopt any detailed quantitative analysis of data. 

This revised software, now called BioloMICS, was first developed as an MS-Windows client/server multi-user application (Robert and Szoke, 2003). It has since been developed further and can be used for retrieval, management, and analysis (e.g. identification, classification and statistical summary) of any biological material or research experiments. In 2000, another software package called BioloMICSWeb (Robert, 2000) was introduced to complement the first version and allow online Internet publication of data prepared with BioloMICS. This package also permits real polyphasic identifications of yeasts to be performed online against the species or strain data-bases (see http //www.cbs.knaw.nl/Yeast.htm 6800 strains, 901 species, 350 characters Robert et al., 2004), Penicillium (see http //www.cbs.knaw.nl/Penicillium.htm 58 species, +60 characters Samson and Frisvad, 2004) or Phaeoacremonium (see http //www.cbs.knaw.nl/Phaeoacremonium.htm 22 species, 40 characters Mostert et al., 2005).
