Chemistry does not always enjoy the best of reputations. Many of our plants and refineries are still potentially dangerous and may pollute their surroundings. At the same time our society enjoys a high standard of living not in small measure through the results of chemistry, which few would give up. I believe that chemistry can and will be able to bring about an equilibrium between mankind s needs and our environmental concerns. Chemistry will continue to benefit mankind in the spirit of Alfred Nobel, a fellow chemist whose example continues to inspire us all. 

The choice of a mass spectrometer to fulfill any particular task must take into account the nature of the substances to be examined, the degree of separation required for mixtures, the types of ion source and inlet systems, and the types of mass analyzer. Once these individual requirements have been defined, it is much easier to discriminate among the numerous commercial instruments that are available. Once suitable mass spectrometers have been identified, it is then often a case of balancing capital and running costs, reUability, ea.se of routine use, after-sales service, and manufacturer reputation.

Although the fabric resulting from treatment was flame resistant, afterglow was reputed to be a serious problem, resulting in the complete combustion of the treated material through smoldering. 

Cost to the Industry. When compared to the potential expense for defending a single claim of tampering, the cost of effective tamper-evident packaging becomes insignificant. Many firms simply caimot afford the cost of responding to product tampering claims, especially if the firm is a small one with a limited or totally related product line where the reputation of the entire product line can be affected by adverse pubHcity on one item. A variety of chemical products and fabrics are reputed to be antibacterial and to prevent odors and the spread of infection (170). One such finish is based on an organosiUcon quaternary ammonium chloride compound (171). Chemical finishing of cotton has also been directed toward improving soil release (172,173), antistatic treatments (174), and rot resistance (175,176). 

The reviewer should estabHsh that the laboratory reporting the study has the necessary professional reputation, scientific experience, and expertise in the area investigated. It should be confirmed that adequate quaHty-control faciHties are in place and good laboratory practices and procedures foUowed. 

Both fiber-glass mats and polyester mats are used either individually or combined in SBS membrane sheets. Successive Quadratic Programming (SQP) The above approach to finding the optimum is called a feasible path method, as it attempts at all times to remain feasible with respect to the equahty and inequahty constraints as it moves to the optimum. A quite different method exists called the Successive Quadratic Programming (SQP) method, which only requires one be feasible at the final solution. Tests that compare the GRG and SQP methods generaUy favor the SQP method so it has the reputation of being one of the best methods known for nonlinear optimization for the type of problems considered here.
