It is used to prepare oil bases with good yields, even from the crudes having a non oil reputation. [Pg.396]

Chemistry does not always enjoy the best of reputations. Many of our plants and refineries are still potentially dangerous and may pollute their surroundings. At the same time our society enjoys a high standard of living not in small measure through the results of chemistry, which few would give up. I believe that chemistry can and will be able to bring about an equilibrium between mankind s needs and our environmental concerns. Chemistry will continue to benefit mankind in the spirit of Alfred Nobel, a fellow chemist whose example continues to inspire us all. [Pg.183]

The choice of a mass spectrometer to fulfill any particular task must take into account the nature of the substances to be examined, the degree of separation required for mixtures, the types of ion source and inlet systems, and the types of mass analyzer. Once these individual requirements have been defined, it is much easier to discriminate among the numerous commercial instruments that are available. Once suitable mass spectrometers have been identified, it is then often a case of balancing capital and running costs, reUability, ea.se of routine use, after-sales service, and manufacturer reputation. [Pg.285]

Parylene C was included among the eadiest MIL-I-46058 (51) qualified coatings (as type XY) and has since enjoyed a reputation for superior performance in protecting and preserving the operation of electronic circuits against the detrimental effects of their operating environments. [Pg.440]

Phenohc resins are the oldest form of synthetic stmctural adhesives. Usage ranges from bonding automobile and other types of brake linings to aerospace apphcations. These adhesives have a reputation for providing the most durable stmctural bonds to aluminum. Because of volatiles, however, and the need for high pressures, the phenohc resins are used less as adhesives than the epoxy resins. [Pg.233]

When racemic mevalonic acid as the corresponding lactone and labeled at C-2 with is fed to the Chilean shmb SJ tanthus acutusM.ejen. labeled p-skytanthine [24282-31-3] (115) is obtained. Skjtanthus alkaloids are reputed to be tremorgenic (85). [Pg.552]

Although this first route was simple in concept, it proved slow in operation, difficult to scale up safely, and relatively uneconomical compared with the other routes. Denitration of the fibers, necessary to allow safe use wherever the fabrics may risk ignition, spoiled their strength and appearance. Nevertheless, Chardoimet earned and truly deserved his reputation as the Eather of Rayon. His process was operated commercially until 1949 when the last factory, bought from the Tubize Co. in the United States in 1934 by a Bra2iUan company, burned down. [Pg.344]

The first known fire-retardant process found durable to laundering was developed in 1912 (4). A modification of an earlier process (5), this finish was based on the formation of a tin(IV) oxide [18282-10-5] deposit. Although the fabric resulting from treatment was flame resistant, afterglow was reputed to be a serious problem, resulting in the complete combustion of the treated material through smoldering. [Pg.485]

Cost to the Industry. When compared to the potential expense for defending a single claim of tampering, the cost of effective tamper-evident packaging becomes insignificant. Many firms simply caimot afford the cost of responding to product tampering claims, especially if the firm is a small one with a limited or totally related product line where the reputation of the entire product line can be affected by adverse pubHcity on one item. LiabiUty insurance caimot return lost customer confidence. [Pg.522]

Many companies provide support for both their research personnel and technical service personnel to participate in these types of activities. Even a pohcy of one conference per person per year, if appHed correctiy, provides a great deal of value to the individual and to the organization. The returns on this investment iaclude intangibles such as additional technical contacts and enhancement of the technical reputation of the company, as well as tangibles such as personnel possessing the latest information in their fields of endeavor, allowing them to better address customer concerns and needs, and developing ideas for process and product improvements. [Pg.380]

A variety of chemical products and fabrics are reputed to be antibacterial and to prevent odors and the spread of infection (170). One such finish is based on an organosiUcon quaternary ammonium chloride compound (171). Chemical finishing of cotton has also been directed toward improving soil release (172,173), antistatic treatments (174), and rot resistance (175,176). [Pg.449]

The reviewer should estabHsh that the laboratory reporting the study has the necessary professional reputation, scientific experience, and expertise in the area investigated. It should be confirmed that adequate quaHty-control faciHties are in place and good laboratory practices and procedures foUowed. [Pg.237]

Both fiber-glass mats and polyester mats are used either individually or combined in SBS membrane sheets. Because of the elastomedc properties of the asphalt, SBS sheets have developed a reputation as being very tough and abuse-resistant. However, they do not have any better ultraviolet resistance than conventional asphalts, so most of the SBS sheets come with a factory-appHed surfacing of granules. [Pg.321]

If the product is an engineering service, then the price is determined by the availabiHty, reputation, and price of competitive providers, as well as the uniqueness and scope of the service. Examples iaclude engineering design, technical laboratory services, project management, and constmction. [Pg.445]

CR has now been used commercially for around 60 years. Over that period of time, it has estabUshed a reputation for reUabiUty, and has become the material of choice for innumerable appHcations. Its aimual volume has approached around 350,000—400,000 metric tons. It is currendy manufactured in five countries in Western Europe, North America, and Japan with a combined capacity of 385,000 metric tons. Du Pont is the largest suppHer with 49% of the total capacity and plants in the United States, UK, and Japan. Other suppHers are Bayer/Miles (22.6%) in Germany and the United States, Denki Kagaku Kogyo (11.7%) in Japan, DISTUGIL (10.4%) in France, and TOSOH (6.2%) inJapan (2). [Pg.549]

Successive Quadratic Programming (SQP) The above approach to finding the optimum is called a feasible path method, as it attempts at all times to remain feasible with respect to the equahty and inequahty constraints as it moves to the optimum. A quite different method exists called the Successive Quadratic Programming (SQP) method, which only requires one be feasible at the final solution. Tests that compare the GRG and SQP methods generaUy favor the SQP method so it has the reputation of being one of the best methods known for nonlinear optimization for the type of problems considered here. [Pg.486]
