Reported Significant Observation

A modification of The Critical Incident Technique was published by the Division of Safety, Standards, and Compliance of the United States Energy Research and Development Administration in 1976. Because the method was also to be applied in the nuclear industry, where the terms Critical and Incident have their own connotations, a new name was used Reported Significant Observation (RSO) Studies. In a paper with that title, it is said that RSO was formally recognized as a significant hazard reduction tool. ... [Pg.455]

Carbon nanotube research was greatly stimulated by the initial report of observation of carbon tubules of nanometer dimensions[l] and the subsequent report on the observation of conditions for the synthesis of large quantities of nanotubes[2,3]. Since these early reports, much work has been done, and the results show basically that carbon nanotubes behave like rolled-up cylinders of graphene sheets of bonded carbon atoms, except that the tubule diameters in some cases are small enough to exhibit the effects of one-dimensional (ID) periodicity. In this article, we review simple aspects of the symmetry of carbon nanotubules (both monolayer and multilayer) and comment on the significance of symmetry for the unique properties predicted for carbon nanotubes because of their ID periodicity. [Pg.27]

Initial tests of Brownian pumping required the measurement of Th in colloids separated from seawater samples. " Th proved to be an especially useful tracer of colloidal uptake of metal species because of its constant source and relative abundance. Baskaran et al. (1992) and Moran and Buesseler (1992) used cross-flow filtration to separate the colloidal fraction and both studies reported significant (up to 78% of total) " Th in this fraction. Subsequent work largely supported these observations (Moran and Buesseler 1993 Huh and Prahl 1995) and suggested the importance of colloidal organic matter in scavenging Th (Niven et al. 1995). [Pg.468]

An interesting experimental observation is that there appears to be an almost direct relation between the minimum ignition energy and the quenching distance [15, 16], Calcote et al. [15] have reported significant data in this regard, and their results are shown in Fig. 7.5. These data are for stoichiometric mixtures with air at 1 atm. [Pg.399]

A significant observation was reported (6) in 1958. From the products of the alkaline hydrogenation of maplewood, Arlt et al. isolated two new products, dihydrosinapyl alcohol and 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)syringol, along with previously reported phenolics. [Pg.253]

Ag (c). Standard state. Though both Berthelot122 and Petersen5 reported significant differences (1.2 and 3.2, respectively) between the heat contents of electrolytic and precipitated silver, modem evidence indicates that there is but one form of solid silver. Some of the observed... [Pg.290]

Arjmandi et al. (1998) reported a 6.9% reduction in cholesterol of postmenopausal women fed 38 g flaxseed. A 14.7% reduction in serum LDL was noted whereas serum HDL cholesterol and TAG were not affected. A 7.4% reduction in apoprotein A levels was also noted in the subjects. Identical reduction (7.5%) in apoprotein A levels was also noted in postmenopausal women on a 40-g/day flaxseed diet (Lucas et al., 2002). Dodin et al. (2005) reported that significant reductions in serum total and HDL cholesterol of postmenopausal women on a 40-g/day flaxseed diet were observed in comparison to a wheat germ control diet. However, the authors considered these changes to be of little clinical importance. A significant observation was that flaxseed and wheat germ could reduce the severity of menopausal symptoms. Lemay et al., (2002) also noted that a diet containing 40 g flaxseed/day improved menopausal symptoms in 25 hypercholesterole-mic menopausal women. Glucose and insulin levels were lowered by the... [Pg.26]

Tang et al. (2005) have reported significant levels ofVOCs in many supermarkets and department stores. In particular, the ratio of indoor to outdoor concentrations of 1-4 dichlorobenzene was as high as 39 in a store where leather products are used, 77.8 in a store that sells luxury fashion items and clothing, and 39 in a supermarket that sells household supplies. These observations demonstrate that consumer goods are potential sources of indoor VOC exposure. [Pg.367]
