The aim of evaluation is to gather data for both measuring the effectiveness of an initiative and making future adjustments on the basis of fhe evaluafion results. Desk research consists mainly of reading as much as possible about other people s experiences and recommendations. Read industry publications to find out what is currently in demand and what looks promising for the future, as well as what price ranges are available for various products. If there are one or two people who have published material of particular relevance, then if possible go and speak to them in person. They may say more in person than they will write, or their work may prove to have been derivative, in which case find the original source. Market research reports and trade publications can be obtained from most local libraries. Most broadsheet national and local newspapers report occasionally on the organic food industry, and sometimes it is possible to identify a gap in the market. [Pg.127]

The discovery that biotin deficiency in young chickens can lead to sudden death resulted in a recommendation to supplement infant formulations with biotin.3 Desthiobiotin, in which the sulfur has been removed and replaced by two hydrogen atoms, can replace biotin in some organisms and appears to lie on one pathway of biosynthesis. b/C Oxybiotin, in which the sulfur has been replaced by oxygen, is active for many organisms and partially active for others. No evidence for conversion to biotin itself has been reported, and oxybiotin may function satisfactorily in at least some enzymes. [Pg.756]
