Repair modeling

In this double-strand break repair model for recombination, the 3 ends are used to initiate the genetic exchange. Once paired with the complementary strand on the intact homolog, a region of hybrid DNA is created that contains complementary strands from two different parent DNAs (the product of step (2)in Fig. 25-31a). Each of the 3 ends can then act as a primer for DNA replication. The structures thus formed, Holliday intermediates (Fig. 25 31b), are a feature of homologous genetic recombination pathways in all organisms. [Pg.980]

It is interesting that the original excision repair model is showing a Lazarus effect in explaining mismatch repair and a second excision pathway in the fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe. [Pg.136]

In an informal way, we often use a scientific approach in daily life. Consider this familiar scenario. While listening to an FM broadcast on your stereo system, you notice the sound is garbled (observation) and assume it is caused by poor reception (hypothesis). To isolate this variable, you play a CD (experiment) the sound is still garbled. If the problem is not poor reception, perhaps the speakers are at fault (new hypothesis). To isolate this variable, you play the CD and listen with headphones (experiment) the sound is clear. You conclude that the speakers need to be repaired (model). The repair shop says the speakers check out fine (new observation), but the power amplifier may be at fault (new hypothesis). Replacing a transistor in the amplifier corrects the garbled sound (new experiment), so the power amplifier was the problem (revised model). Approaching a problem scientifically is a common practice, even if you re not aware of it. [Pg.9]

As the name imphes, in this approach (Distefano Puliafito 2007b Distefano Puhafito 2007a) reliability block diagrams are used to specify the redimdancy structure of the system. The edges of the diagram are attributed with components, which are implicitly defined to have 3 states active, standby and failed. Components in active and standby-state can fail (a transition to state failed occurs) whereas failed components can be repaired (modeled by a transition to the state active). Moreover, dependency edges can be defined by the modeler further specifying the behavior of the components and interdependencies between pairs of components. The DRBD-approach is very flexible in total, 24 different kinds of dependencies between a pair of components can be defined. The... [Pg.171]

Autologous AM has been proposed for in utero repair of myelomenigocele in animal models. Utilizing a fetal lamb model, Brown et al. found an inaease in preserved motor neurons and a larger area of spinal cord tissue present in AM lamb models when compared to skin only repaired models. This increase in spinal cord tissue and motor neuron preservation demonstrate potential early interventions in the fetal repair of myelomeningocele. Dried human AM appears to be an ideal substitute for dura, since it is replaced by natural tissue. AM is used to reduce postlaminectomy epidural adhesions. ... [Pg.160]

Despite having been modelled only one offshore wind turbine, the considered maintenance strategy and cost function can be used for a wind farm provided that the dependencies between wind turbines due to sharing common logistic resources are modelled. In such case, the failure and repair models can be assumed the same for equal components in all wind turbines more repair teams, different numbers of vessels and the use of an helicopter for harsh weather conditions could be introduced in the model to evaluate the impact in the costs, revenues and availability of the wind farm. Also, the use of opportunistic maintenance should be evaluated since it is reasonable to expect that the simultaneous maintenance of several wind turbines would be less costly. [Pg.1154]

Next step in the reliability analysis is the repair model. As it was stated in section 4.1 it is a three phase approach since at first the failed component is isolated and moved to other server or other virtual machine instance, secondly the component is repaired and finally the normal operation is restored. We need to describe the process of reconfiguration and to model duration of each phase. [Pg.2080]

Local administration of hydroxyapatite powder at the tendon-bone interface in both a 3-week delayed-repair rat model and an acute-repair model showed improvement in healing the injured rotator cuff (Zhao et al 2014 Kovacevic et al., 2011). Calcium phosphate nanocomposites for tendon-to-bone interface repair can be categorized as the following. [Pg.314]
