Musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremities (such as carpal tunnel syndrome and rotator cuff tendinitis) due to work factors are common and occur in nearly tdl sectors of our economy. More than 2 hUlion in workers compensation costs are spent annually on these work-related problems. Musculoskeletal disorders of the neck and upper extremities due to work factors affect employees in every type of workplace and include such diverse workers as food processors, automobile and electronics assemblers, carpenters, office data-entry workers, grocery store cashiers, and garment workers. The highest rates of these disorders occur in the industries with a substantial amount of repetitive, forceful work. Musculoskeletal disorders affect the soft tissues of the neck, shoulder, elbow, hand, wrist, and fingers. [Pg.1167]

Rotator cuff tendinitis The irritation and sweUing of the tendon or the bursae of the shoulder that is caused by continuous muscle or tendon effort to keep the arm elevated. [Pg.1382]

Constrained versions of this concept have been used earlier and were largely unsuccessful because of loosening (Boulahia et al. 2002). In 1987, Grammont and Baulot designed a semiconstrained reverse prosthesis and recommended it be used prudently and in patients older than 70 years of age (Boulahia et al. 2002). Since then, reports from Europe have noted its success in a limited number of rotator cuff deficient patients after relatively short (2 to 3 years) follow-up periods (Boulahia et al. 2002, De Wilde et al. 2001, Rittmeister and Kerschbaumer 2001). [Pg.212]

The concept is, however, very much in its infancy and its place in the future of shoulder repair has yet to be determined. Encore Medical Corp. (Austin, TX) is currently conducting an investigational device exemption (IDE) study of its new Reverse Shoulder Prosthesis system (Figure 9.12). The first implantation in North America of another reverse prosthesis design (the Delta prosthesis [DePuy, Warsaw, IN]) was reported to have been conducted on February 27, 2003, hy Dr. Anthony Miniaci in Toronto, Canada (Canada Newswire 2003). The potential benefits of the concept are that it can allow better function than standard prostheses without relying on rotator cuff function and that it can decrease bending moment forces at the prosthesis-glenoid interface. If these benefits are clinically realized, then it could become an important addition to standard prostheses, especially in difficult arthroplasty cases. [Pg.212]

Musculoskeletal disorders are disorders of the muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, joints, cartilage and spinal discs not caused by slips, trips, falls, motor vehicle accidents or other similar accidents. Examples are carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff syndrome, De Quervain s disease, trigger finger, tarsal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, epicondylitis, tendinitis, Raynaud s phenomenon, carpet layers knee, herniated spinal disc, and low back pain. [Pg.80]

Transverse fractures result from direct blows. Twisting injuries produce the more common spiral fracture. In infants, this injury should always rouse suspicion of child abuse. The position of the bony fragments will be determined by the pull of adjacent muscles. For proximal metaphyseal fractures, the rotator cuff abducts the proximal fragment while the distal fragment is adducted by the pectoralis muscle. [Pg.145]

The capsule of the glenohumeral joint is loose and pleated. The ligaments, which are merely thickenings in the capsule, provide little support. The major support of the humerus into the fossa is provided by the rotator cuff muscles, which hold the head into the fossa. These muscles include the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis. Abduction-adduction and axial and horizontal rotations are coupled in that angular motions are accompanied by translatory slides. The caudal slide of the humeral head with abduction confers increased freedom of motion on the supraspinatus tendon beneath the coracoacromial ligament. [Pg.410]
