This chapter is organized as follows. The approach highlighted here is described in section 17.2. Due to the special class of basis functions employed for the least-squares fit, the method is named combined hyperbolic inverse power representation or CHIPR from its initials, and uses the MBE as the starting point. Still in its infancy, the approach has been tested so far on tria-tomic systems that have been much studied by other schemes, namely H3 and HO2. Reasons for their choice are pinpointed in section 17.3, where the results obtained are reviewed. Section 17.4 gathers the concluding remarks and prospects for future work. [Pg.435]

The small size of a nanomaterial implies the existence of interfaces between its components, or between itself and vacuum. These interfaces are often responsible for the special properties observed. That is why the first part of this paper deals with some remarkable and illustrative examples of technologically important interfaces. The second part focuses on nanoobjects, potentially nanomaterials because of their small size but whose application is not yet effective. The third part is dedicated to well-established nanomaterials, the knowledge of which has been vastly improved thanks to EELS in a (S)TEM. Finally, a more prospective part presents the very next challenges to be faced in a near future. In all these parts, both Core Loss and LELS examples are given to demonstrate the complementarity of the two energy domains. [Pg.59]

Over 30 billion tablets of NSAID were dispensed in the United States in 2000 approximately 16% represent prescriptions for NSAIDs [43]. These compounds enjoy a remarkable benefit/risk ratio when used in the treatment of acute self-limited pain syndromes. However, when taken chronically by the elderly or individuals with certain co-morbid conditions, the frequency of adverse reactions rises dramatically. Unfortunately, the real incidence of nephrotoxicity due to NSAIDs is unknown due to a lack of an accurate method of detection. The overall incidence could be very low, considering that up to 40 million people in the United States take NSAIDs on a regular basis [44]. In the 10 year-period 1972-1982,8 miUion prescriptions for mefenamic acid were given in the United Kingdom, and only 23 cases of mefenamic acid nephropathy were observed [45]. This is in contrast to the higher incidence of nephrotoxicity in selected and prospective studies. Corwin and Bonventre [46] found that renal insufficiency secondary to NSAIDs accounted for approximately 6% of cases of ARF seen during a two-year period. In a prospective collaborative study, NSAIDs rep-... [Pg.7]

Some of these things Admiral Sherman and I talked about that day, as the Rochester lay in the Grand Canal of Venice but I would not wish any reader to conclude that the above remarks represent the admiral s views, though he is certainly fully aware of the vital importance of sea power to our position and prospects in the Mediterranean. He is, indeed, one of the ablest officers ever to wear American naval uniform. In his last assignment, as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Operations, he was instrumental in working out the details of the National Security Act of 1947, setting up the National Military Establishment. During the late war he served as deputy chief of staff to Admiral Nimitz in the Pacific and later commanded a carrier division. [Pg.262]
