A plof of fhe real part of the relative heat release response for three Lewis numbers is shown in Figure 5.1.10. This plot was calculated for a reduced activation energy y3 = 10 and a burnf gas femperafure of 1800 K, represen-fative of a lean hydrocarbon-air flame. Note fhaf fhe order of magnitude of fhe relative response of fhe flame is only a little more than unity. This is a relatively weak response. For example, a sound pressure level of 120 dB corresponds to a relative pressure oscillation p /p = 2 X10 so fhe fluctuation in the heat release rate will be of fhe same order of magnifude.

Some patients unresponsive to SSRIs have improved with venlafaxine extended release. Response has been reported by week 3. 

Data belonging to distribution profiles may be compared either vertically along the release/response ordinate or horizontally along the time abscissa. The semi-invariants (moments) provide a complete set of metrics, representing both aspects in logical sequence AUC accounts (vertically) for the difference of the extent, the mean compares (horizontally) the rates, and higher-order moments and higher-order statistics (variance, etc.) characterize the shape aspect from coarse to finer.

If artificial castoreum scent marks are placed on the banks of a pond, beavers, C. canadensis, are more likely to visit, destroy, and re-mark the sites as the complexity of the artificial odor composition increases (Fig. 6.14). While some single phenolics from castoreum such as 4-ethylphenol trigger marking (Miiller-Schwarze and Houlihan, 1991), the response increases as the mixture grows to 4, 6,10,13, and finally 15 compounds. A mixture of 14 phenolics and 12 neutrals (mostly oxygenated monoterpenes) released responses almost as strong as whole castoreum (Schulte etal., 1995).

Consider, for example, the milk-ejection reflex. This behavior may not normally be triggered by pheromones, but it can occur within seconds of the onset of suckling or exposure to stimuli, including odors, that have become associated with suckling (Wakerly, Clarke, Summerlee, 1994). Milk ejection in these circumstances would therefore seem to qualify as a released response. But because milk ejection is secondary to the hormonal effects of oxytocin released from the posterior pituitary, the response would seem to qualify as a primed effect.
