Release agent silicone oil

In the first application, either fluids are coated or solids are sprayed into a mould, or on to a surface, to make it non-stick . Examples of these release agents inclnde oils (organic, fluorocarbon and silicones), soaps and waxes. The choice of any given release agent is usually governed by heat or chemical resistance, the number of release cycles and the sensitivity of the released material to the transferred release agent. [Pg.399]

Industrially, silicone surfactants are used in a variety of processes including foam, textile, concrete and thermoplastic production, and applications include use as foam stabilisers, defoamers, emulsifiers, dispersants, wetters, adhesives, lubricants and release agents [1]. The ability of silicone surfactants to also function in organic media creates a unique niche for their use, such as in polyurethane foam manufacture and as additives to paints and oil-based formulations, whilst the ability to lower surface tension in aqueous solutions provides useful superwetting properties. Neutral Additives. In the course of our work, carbon black gave excellent, smooth surfaces. Samples containing 30% sulfur and 5% carbon black are unaltered after eight years. Originally, silicon grease, and later vacuum pump oil, were added as die-release agents. This was found to be unnecessary. Pure silicone oils are used as defoaming agents in the crude oil industry. In the rubber and plastics industry they are widely used as mold release agents. Their physiological inertness enables their use in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Their water repelling (hydrophobic) properties result in skin creams with good protective properties. The hydrophobic properties of silicone oils endow car, furniture and protective polishes with protective and non-aggressive properties. [Pg.316]

Many of the unique properties of silicone oils are associated with the surface effects of dimethylsiloxanes, eg, imparting water repellency to fabrics, antifoaming agents, release liners for adhesive labels, and a variety of polishes and waxes (343). Dimethylsilicone oils can spread onto many solid and liquid surfaces to form films of molecular dimensions (344,345). This phenomenon is gready affected by even small changes in the chemical structure of siloxane in the siloxane polymer. Increasing the size of the alkyl substituent from methyl to ethyl dramatically reduces the film-forming ability of the polymer (346). The phenyl-substituted silicones are spread onto water or solid surfaces more slowly than PDMS (347). [Pg.52]
