Inagaki, N., Tasaka, S. and Kawai, H. (1992). Surface modification of Kevlar 49 fiber by a combination of plasma treatment and coupling agent treatment for silicon rubber composite. J. Adhesion Sci. Technol. 6, 279-291. [Pg.232]

It is usually not necessary to change the surface activity of carbon blacks, whereas silicas demand special attention. For instance, it is necessary to treat silica before its use in SBR. Coupling agents like y-mercapto propyl triethoxy silanes allow the formation of strong bonds between silica and the polymer. However, strong chemical bonds are not always desirable. This is typically the case for silica/silicone rubber mixes where strong and unavoidable links lead to a hardening of the mix, which becomes brittle and cannot be reworked. In this case, a surface deactivation treatment of the silica is essential. [Pg.248]

ESR has been used to investigate the role of the filler-matrix Interaction in filled rubbers at cryogenic temperatures (10). The breakdown In adhesion between filler and matrix results In vacuoles or voids in the material. Figures 3 and 4 show a contrast In behavior for Sp glass spheres In rubber with and without a silicone coupling agent treatment. In the first case strength Is low and very few free radicals are produced... [Pg.202]

The hydrosilylation of unsaturated polymers (e.g, polybutadiene, polyiso-prene, polyesters, polyenes, and polycarbonates) with a silane having hydrolyzable substituents at silicon atoms leads to polymeric systems with enhanced activity toward mineral fillers (32). Such process also offers a useful and convenient method for preparing silane-modified polymers that may find potential applications as rubber materials, adhesives, and drug delivery agents. Both >C=C< as well >C=0 bonds are capable of hydrosilylation. This modification is connected with a reversed use of the silane (siloxane) coupling agents. Trialkoxysilyl groups are commonly incorporated onto the polymers by Pt-catalyzed hydrosilylation... [Pg.1318]
