Reinforcing schemes

Constructability can be less of a problem with shells. The logistics of conventional reinforcement schemes with alternative upgrade options can be quite difficult. Reinforcing connections and bracing may require temporary supports of the members being reconnected. Access to the critical joints for reinforcement can sometimes be virtually impossible. [Pg.73]

In this example, retrofit Option H is likely to be the most cost effective upgrade because of the minimal usage of new materials and formwork. This option might not be feasible due to existing obstructions, or due to extensive alterations required to achieve the proposed reinforcement scheme. If Option U is not practical or feasible, one of the other options may be used. The cost differential between the options should be minimal. [Pg.259]

The reinforcement scheme is shown in Figure 7.5. The reinforcement area required is... [Pg.93]

Radicals are particularly strongly stabilized when both an electron-attracting and an electron-donating substituent are present at the radical site. This has been called mero-stabilization" or " capto-dative stabilization. This type of stabilization results from mutual reinforcement of the two substituent effects. Scheme 12.3 gives some information on the stability of this type of radical. [Pg.694]

The basic nature of composite materials was introduced in Chapter 1. An overall classification scheme was presented, and the mechanical behavior aspects of composite materials that differ from those of conventional materials were described in a qualitative fashion. The book was then restricted to laminated fiber-reinforced composite mafeffals. The basic definitions and how such materials are made were then treated. Finally, the current and potential advantages of composite materials were discussed along with some case histories that clearly reveal how composite materials are used in structures. [Pg.332]

Equation 10.49 embodies Hinton, et.al. s Boltzman Machine learning scheme. Notice that it consists of two different parts. The first part, < SiSj >ciamped) is essentially the same as the Hebb rule used in Hopfield s net (equation 10.19), and reinforces the connections that lead from input to output. The second part, < SiSj >free> Can be likened to a Hebbian unlearning, whereby poor associations are effectively unlearned. [Pg.535]

An alternative programme of instraction aimed at reinforcing the use of the triplet relationship when describing and explaining the seven types of chemical reactions was developed by the second anthor and incorporated into the prescribed scheme of work. In order to delineate the content of the alternative instructional prograrmne, the concept map in Fig. 7.1 (Chandrasegaran, 2004) was developed. The concept map encapsulates the characteristics of the seven chemical reactions and indicates... [Pg.156]

Further evidence consistent with the polar radical pair mechanism was provided by a crossover experiment (Scheme 6.26). A 1 1 mixture of labeled 8Z /8 and unlabeled 8Z/8E was heated in xylene at 125 °C for 2h and at 135 °C for 4h to afford hydroxypyrimidinones 3 and 3. Analysis of the products by high resolution mass spectrometry showed no crossover between the labeled and unlabeled fragments. This result reinforces the computational results discussed previously wherein PRP recombines to give product within the solvent cage (Scheme 6.24). [Pg.189]

Recent work has focused on a variety of thermoplastic elastomers and modified thermoplastic polyimides based on the aminopropyl end functionality present in suitably equilibrated polydimethylsiloxanes. Characteristic of these are the urea linked materials described in references 22-25. The chemistry is summarized in Scheme 7. A characteristic stress-strain curve and dynamic mechanical behavior for the urea linked systems in provided in Figures 3 and 4. It was of interest to note that the ultimate properties of the soluble, processible, urea linked copolymers were equivalent to some of the best silica reinforced, chemically crosslinked, silicone rubber... [Pg.186]

The quantitative effects of steric encumbrance on the electron-transfer kinetics reinforce the notion that the inner-sphere character of the contact ion pair D+, A- is critical to the electron-transfer paradigm in Scheme 1. Charge-transfer bonding as established in the encounter complex (see above) is doubtless an important consideration in the quantitative treatment of the energetics. None the less, the successful application of the electron-transfer paradigm to the... [Pg.303]

There is no experimentally established optimum frequency for the distribution of samples. The minimum frequency is about four rounds per year. Tests that are less frequent than this are probably ineffective in reinforcing the need for maintaining quality standards or for following up marginally poor performance. A frequency of one round per month for any particular type of analysis is the maximum that is likely to be effective. Postal circulation of samples and results would usually impose a minimum of two weeks for a round to be completed and it is possible that over-frequent rounds have the effect of discouraging some laboratories from conducting their own routine quality control. The cost of proficiency testing schemes in terms of analysts time, cost of materials and interruptions to other work has also to be considered. [Pg.183]

Because of round-off errors, symmetry contamination is often present even when the initial vector is properly symmetrized. To circumvent this problem, an effective scheme to reinforce the symmetry at every Lanczos recursion step has been proposed independently by Chen and Guo100 and by Wang and Carrington.195 Specifically, the Lanczos recursion is executed with symmetry-adapted vectors, but the matrix-vector multiplication is performed at every Lanczos step with the unsymmetrized vector. In other words, the symmetrized vectors are combined just before the operation Hq, and the resultant vector is symmetrized using the projection operators ... [Pg.322]
