The industrial value of furfuryl alcohol is a consequence of its low viscosity, high reactivity, and the outstanding chemical, mechanical, and thermal properties of its polymers, corrosion resistance, nonburning, low smoke emission, and exceUent char formation. The reactivity profile of furfuryl alcohol and resins is such that final curing can take place at ambient temperature with strong acids or at elevated temperature with latent acids. Major markets for furfuryl alcohol resins include the production of cores and molds for casting metals, corrosion-resistant fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs), binders for refractories and corrosion-resistant cements and mortars. [Pg.80]

Common uses for polyester resins are reinforced plastics automotive parts boat hulls foams encapsulation of electrical equipment protective coatings ducts flues and other structural applications low pressure laminates magnetic tapes piping bottles non-woven disposable filters and low-temperature mortars. [Pg.1338]

One of the effective treatment of recycling method for scrap fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) is pulverization. The properties of the cement mortar containing the pulverized scrap FRP powder, cured in normal condition are reported in some papers [1], [2], [3],... [Pg.110]

The characteristic brittleness of unsaturated polyester resins was overcome by reinforcement with silane-treated fiber glass. While over 750 thousand tons of these reinforced plastics are produced annually in the U.S., the emphasis in this chapter will be on room temperature-curable-filled unsaturated polyester mortars or concrete. As discussed in Chapters 1 and 7, these anaerobic polyester mortars are widely used as materials of construction.—... [Pg.63]

C, and in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, B4C is the hardest compound known up to now. B4C is thus used for wear-resistant parts and inserts for mortars and ball mills, wear plates, sand blasting nozzles, dressing tools for grinding wheels, lightweight armor plates for helicopters, tanks, and in composites of glass fiber-reinforced plastics as bullet-proof protection for personnel. [Pg.853]

Furfuryl alcohol-based resins are used as binding agents in foundry sand and as corrosion inhibitors in mortar, grout, and cement. Because of their heat resistance, furan resins are used in the manufacture of fiberglass-reinforced plastic equipment. Derivatives of furfuryl alcohol (chemical formula CjH(,02) include tetrahydro furfuryl alcohol, furane resins and organic furfural. [Pg.49]

B4C boron carbide has a melting point of 2450 °C and a hardness somewhere between those of SiC and diamond. This makes the material a suitable abrasive. It is used in heads of sand blasting equipment, in mortars and in armour plating. For the latter application a B4C plate is provided on both sides with a plastic which has been reinforced with glass fibre. This is done to reduce the risk of splintering. Boron carbide is also used as the raw material for many other boron compounds ... [Pg.280]

Polymer modified lightweight cement mortar (PLCM) with plastics waste as aggregate is widely used as substrate mortar layer on the reinforced concrete wall for external ceramic wall tile installations instead of the ordinary cement mortar conventionally used. The reasons that this mortar is popularly used in building site are it s own lightweight and excellent workability for troweling. [Pg.62]

The classic thermosets, such as ebonite, phenolics, ureas, melamines and polyesters as well as the epoxies, when reinforced with fiberglass or graphite fibers could also be classified as high performance thermosets. While these plastics cannot be readily extruded or injection molded, they are resistant to the effects of moderately high hostile environments. Phenolic resin mortars have been used for over a half century for the construction of chemical resistant vessels and for joining brick and tile used as linings in hot acid environments. (1.)... [Pg.87]

It has also been claimed that the plasticity and mobihty of the mortar and the strength of reinforced concrete may be increased by a preceding magnetic treatment of the mixing water (Afanaseva, 1992). [Pg.38]
