Overall DBP removal followed the order ozonation reactive GAC > UV irradiation>chlorination>bromination, with the magnetic treatment results being inconclusive. [Pg.142]

The first evaluation of a medical procedure using placebo controls occurred some 200 years later. The procedure was mesmerism - now more commonly called hypnosis - as practised by the disciples of the 18th-century Viennese physician Franz Anton Mesmer. Mesmer believed that many illnesses were caused by a bodily imbalance of an invisible magnetic fluid that permeated the universe. Just as antidepressants are used today to restore a presumed chemical imbalance, so Mesmer and his followers used magnetic treatment to restore the magnetic imbalance that they believed was the cause of their patients illnesses. [Pg.104]

PS samples were prepared by anodic etching of 10 Q-cm (111) boron doped p-Si wafers in a HF solution (48 wt.%) C2H50H (1 1) at the current density of 10 mA/cm for 5 min. The samples were aged in air for 3 days. The magnetic treatment of PS was carried out in a constant magnetic field of 0.17 T for 12 days in air. The duration of the reference sample exposition to air without... [Pg.299]

Changes in the fluid-precipitate equilibrium that alter the relative stabilities of two phases with relatively similar lattice energies, e.g. X-ray diffraction data show differences in zinc phosphate phases with and without magnetic treatment. [Pg.364]

While this method can be quite promising, it still needs to be tested on the field more often. But if this method proves to be a really feasible method to treat MIC, especially in comparison with chemical treatment of MIC by biocides, magnetic treatment of MIC method will have a bright future. In our opinion, water treatment industry will warmly welcome such environmentally friendly treatment methods. [Pg.117]

It has also been claimed that the plasticity and mobihty of the mortar and the strength of reinforced concrete may be increased by a preceding magnetic treatment of the mixing water (Afanaseva, 1992). [Pg.38]

The changes of vesicle shapes are due to temperature or pressure changes, the addition of various amphiphiles or adsorbents, mechanical, electrical or magnetic treatments, or to adhesion [14,22,23,25,47]. Temperature changes induce area/ volume differences due to the different expansion coefficients of lipid and water, as well as to the two- and three-dimensional response of the system to external stress. [Pg.19]

The magnetization treatment results in the electrolyte having low viscosity and good fluidity, which resolve the difficulty of electrolyte filling. [Pg.63]

The essence of the purification method used in the production of diamond nanopowders is to dissolve impurities of metals and their compounds and oxidize nondiamond forms of carbon by chromic anhydride in the presence of sulfuric acid. The use of such a strong oxidant in the presence of a strong acid makes it possible to combine in one stage the purification of diamonds both from nondiamond carbon forms and from metal impurities. The suspension of the nanodiamond-containing mixture is filtered through a set of sieves to remove mechanical impurities, the metal part is removed by magnetic treatment, and the solid phase is concentrated by nutsch filters. Dissolution of impurities of metals and their compounds and oxidation of nondiamond forms of carbon is carried out in a reactor (further on, this operation is called oxidation ). One run of oxidation to purify 3.3-3.7-kg solid phase of the mixture requires 24-27-kg sulfuric acid and 6.9-7.5-kg chromic anhydride. In the oxidation, when a solution of chromic anhydride is added, the temperature in the reactor reaches 125-130°C the mixture is kept in the reactor with sulfuric acid and chromic anhydride for 3-4 h. Following the oxidation, the reaction mixture is washed with water to remove chromium and sulfuric-acid salts. The yield is a nanodiamond suspension that contains 2.3-2.5-kg solid phase. [Pg.31]
