Reflected light microscope

Sketch the structures that you would expect to see if you looked at polished sections of the samples under a reflecting light microscope. Label the phases, and any other features of interest. You may assume that each specimen has been cooled moderately slowly from a temperature of 1100°C.

Microscopic examinations of the various samples were performed on a Leitz reflected light microscope. The samples were embedded in Lucite plastic and polished according to ASTM specifications. Micrographs were taken at a magnification of 600 using partial crossed nicols.

Compared to that given in Fig. 2.11, an adequate improvement is the use of fibre optic cable which conducts the light from Hg-Xe arc lamp to the reflected light microscope. The thickness is determined by the microinterferometric technique of Scheludko-Exerowa (see Section 2.1). 

In a reflected light microscope the brightness is more highly dependent on NA. 

These relationships indicate that the brightness decreases rapidly with increasing magnification, and controlling NA is not only important for resolution but also for brightness, particularly in a reflected light microscope.

A. Water etch (distilled water) in the pH range of 6.5 to 7.0 reacts rapidly with C A to form an interference film on the CjA that produces a bluish color when viewed through a reflected-light microscope. The procedure must be followed closely because other colors may appear with shorter etch times or slightly different acidities. Although the fluoroaluminate compound sometimes also reacts to produce a faintly visible brownish purple hue, this particular reaction is not used for positive identification.

The most widely used petrographic analyses of coal are maceral analysis and vitrinite reflectance analysis. Both are performed on representative samples ground to < 1 mm in size and embedded in resin. The polished surfaces are then examined under a white reflected light microscope.
