Redefinition

An important part of the decision-making tool flow chart (see Fig. 1) is the redefinition of the specifications by the sensor customer after the surveying and testing of commercial sensor systems. This process almost always involves a downgrading of the expectations of the sensor customer, but it can also force a reaUstic evaluation of what sensor information really needs to be made available and at what cost. [Pg.390]

Thus, the Tsai-Wu tensor failure criterion is obviously of more general character than the Tsai-Hill or Hoffman failure criteria. Specific advantages of the Tsai-Wu failure criterion include (1) invariance under rotation or redefinition of coordinates (2) transformation via known tensor-transformation laws (so data interpretation is eased) and (3) symmetry properties similar to those of the stiffnesses and compliances. Accordingly, the mathematical operations with this tensor failure criterion are well-known and relatively straightforward. [Pg.116]

As in Example 10.1, equality of the reaction rates plus the site balance gives four independent equations. Combining them allows a solution for while eliminating the surface concentrations [S], [AS], and [PS]. After much algebra and a redefinition of constants,... [Pg.357]

Problem 10.1 gives the result before the redefinition of constants. [Pg.357]

There are enough equations to eliminate the surface equations from the reaction rate. After redefinition of constants. [Pg.359]

Values of e are correlated by the Op constants in accord with eq. (61) (119, 120). Kawabata, Tsuruta, and Furukawa (121) have proposed a revised form of the Price-Alfrey equation based on the definition e = 0 for styrene. On the basis of this redefinition, they have calculated a new set of Q values. These Q values are linear in the Hammett 0 constants. It is not clear from their paper whether this linear relationship is for substituents directly bonded to the carbon-carbon double bond or whether it is applicable only to Q values for substituted styrenes. Charton and Capato (119) were unable to obtain significant correlations between any a constants and the q values of Schwan and Price (117). Zutty and Burkhart (122) have proposed a redefinition of the Price-Alfrey equation based on ethylene as the reference system with Qo and e defined as 1 and 0, respectively. [Pg.124]

Thus, the initial value of the initiator concentrations, [Il]° and [I2]°, are calculated with Equation 15, for given values of the initial loading, feed rates, temperature, and time for the main semi-batch step, and [M]° is fixed according to experimental data from the base case semi-batch step. The nonlinear differential equation for [M] in terms of [II] and [I2] is given by Equation 16. Equation 10, with a redefinition of terms, is the differential equation mass balance for [II] and [12]. In the finishing step, only one of the initiators would be added for residual monomer reduction. Thus, Qm = 0,... [Pg.317]

This redefinition establishes the effective activation/deactivation equilibrium constant K=k k 2 = k lk2. (Note that in the cellular automata models, the rate constants k are expressed as transition probabilities per iteration Pi) Using the above redefinition, the mechanism of Eq. (9.1) becomes a set of first-order reactions... [Pg.145]

Since these formal bases, which are supposed to describe the true continuum background, will be represented upon finite sets, all the qnantities which must be interpolated from these representations (i.e. matrix elements and phaseshifts) must be smooth functions of the energy index this reqnires a snitable redefinition of the channel hamiltonian Hp if this supports narrow shape resonances. [Pg.369]

This term has increasingly come to be employed (as here) in a rather different sense from that introduced by R. F. Furchgott (Section 1.4.2). With this newer usage, intrinsic efficacy indicates the maximum receptor activation (often expressed as the fraction of receptors in the active state) that can be achieved by an agonist acting through a mechanism that can be formulated and studied at the molecular level, as in the present example. The intention of this redefinition is to focus on the receptor itself and its immediate transduction mechanism (e.g., G-protein activation), rather than on the cellular events that follow. [Pg.39]

Adolf and Martin [15] postulated, since the near critical gels are self-similar, that a change in the extent of cure results in a mere change in scale, but the functional form of the relaxation modulus remains the same. They accounted for this change in scale by redefinition of time and by a suitable redefinition of the equilibrium modulus. The data were rescaled as G /Ge(p) and G"/Ge(p) over (oimax(p). The result is a set of master curves, one for the sol (Fig. 23a) and one for the gel (Fig. 23 b). [Pg.214]

Our new understanding of conidium development has resulted in the redefinition of many genera of medically important fungi. Terms such as spore and conidium (plural, conidia) are no longer used interchangeably. Many mycologists consider spores to be propagules that arise either from meiosis (ascospores, basidio-spores, oospores,... [Pg.64]

Reducing problematic behavior to biological causes calls for pharmaceutical solutions and here too powerful corporate interests foster such explanations. The redefinition of hyperactivity as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), for example, has significantly benefitted the pharmaceutical industry. The use of Ritalin as a treatment for ADD has doubled since 1995, and it is prescribed to over 4 million children in the US. Production of the drug is up 700 % since 1990, and 90 % of the production is consumed in the US where pharmaco-genomics is a burgeoning field. Europeans have been more cautious, and the International Narcotics Control Board of the UN has expressed concern about the growing tendency to redefine behavior as amenable to pharmaceutical modification. [Pg.314]

Just like the g-value and A-values also the zero-field interaction parameter can be anisotropic and have three values Dy, Dy and Dz. In contrast to g and A, however, the three D- s are not independent because D2 + Dy2 + D2 = 0, and so they can be reduced to two independent parameters by redefinition ... [Pg.82]

We wish to mention the recent proposal for a redefinition of Kelvin in terms of mechanical units through the Boltzmann constant [6-7] the Kelvin should be defined as the unit of thermodynamic temperature such that the value of the Boltzmann constant is 1.3806505 x 10 23 JK 1 exactly. Of course, this value of the Boltzmann constant should be consistent with a thermodynamic temperature of the triple point of water of 273.16 K. [Pg.191]

Two of the three SI base units have in the meantime acquired redefinitions in atomic terms (e.g., the second is now defined as 9 192 631 770 hyperfine oscillations of a cesium atom). However, the definitions (C.2a)-(C.2c) conceal another unfortunate aspect of SI units that cannot be overcome merely by atomic redefinitions. In the theory of classical or quantal electrical interactions, the most fundamental equation is Coulomb s law, which expresses the potential energy V of two charged particles of charge q and 2 at separation R as... [Pg.725]

A Hopf algebra emerges by a proper redefinition of the antilinear characteristics of TFD. Consider g = giti = 1,2,3,.. be an associative algebra defined on the field of the complex numbers and let g be equipped with a Lie algebra structure specified by giOgj = C gk, where 0 is the Lie product and Cfj are the structure constants (we are assuming the rule of sum over repeated indeces). Now we take g first realized by C = Ai,i = 1,2,3,.. such that the commutator [Ai,Aj is the Lie product of elements Ai,Aj G C. Consider tp and (p two representations of C, such that ip (A) (linear operators defined on a representation vector space As a consequence,... [Pg.203]

We teach our students that the infinite zero-point energy that arises when a free relativistic scalar (or Dirac-) field theory is canonically quantized can be subtracted (discarded) by a suitable redefinition of the energy-origin in other words, by normal ordering. However, the energy-origin can be re-defined only once, and only in homogenous space (i.e. without boundary conditions) and... [Pg.232]

One of the benefits of using an import (virtual or otherwise) is that you are forced to use a different name for a different concept Redefinitions aren t allowed, although extensions are fine. (Maybe they should have called them BlueLineCircuits or something.) And one of the benefits of talking about virtual packages is that it makes you consider what the sources of your ideas are or should be and whether you are or should be using the same or different terms for some wider body of ideas.4... [Pg.323]

Each redefinition of a method should satisfy all the specifications, from different model packages, that refer to that method. [Pg.342]

Since the original problem is bilinear, a redefinition of variables was performed to transform it into a linear one, according to the strategy described in Section 4.3. [Pg.107]
