Redefinition

An important part of the decision-making tool flow chart (see Fig. 1) is the redefinition of the specifications by the sensor customer after the surveying and testing of commercial sensor systems. This process almost always involves a downgrading of the expectations of the sensor customer, but it can also force a reaUstic evaluation of what sensor information really needs to be made available and at what cost. 

Thus, the Tsai-Wu tensor failure criterion is obviously of more general character than the Tsai-Hill or Hoffman failure criteria. Specific advantages of the Tsai-Wu failure criterion include (1) invariance under rotation or redefinition of coordinates (2) transformation via known tensor-transformation laws (so data interpretation is eased) and (3) symmetry properties similar to those of the stiffnesses and compliances. Accordingly, the mathematical operations with this tensor failure criterion are well-known and relatively straightforward.

Values of e are correlated by the Op constants in accord with eq. (61) (119, 120). Kawabata, Tsuruta, and Furukawa (121) have proposed a revised form of the Price-Alfrey equation based on the definition e = 0 for styrene. On the basis of this redefinition, they have calculated a new set of Q values. These Q values are linear in the Hammett 0 constants. It is not clear from their paper whether this linear relationship is for substituents directly bonded to the carbon-carbon double bond or whether it is applicable only to Q values for substituted styrenes. This term has increasingly come to be employed (as here) in a rather different sense from that introduced by R. F. Furchgott (Section 1.4.2). We wish to mention the recent proposal for a redefinition of Kelvin in terms of mechanical units through the Boltzmann constant [6-7] the Kelvin should be defined as the unit of thermodynamic temperature such that the value of the Boltzmann constant is 1.3806505 x 10 23 JK 1 exactly. Of course, this value of the Boltzmann constant should be consistent with a thermodynamic temperature of the triple point of water of 273.16 K. 

Two of the three SI base units have in the meantime acquired redefinitions in atomic terms (e.g., the second is now defined as 9 192 631 770 hyperfine oscillations of a cesium atom). However, the definitions (C.2a)-(C.2c) conceal another unfortunate aspect of SI units that cannot be overcome merely by atomic redefinitions. We teach our students that the infinite zero-point energy that arises when a free relativistic scalar (or Dirac-) field theory is canonically quantized can be subtracted (discarded) by a suitable redefinition of the energy-origin in other words, by normal ordering.
