PROUSTITE. This ruby-silver mineral crystallizes in the hexagonal system its name is a product of its scarlet-to-vermilion color when first mined It is a silver arsenic sulfide. AgjAsS, of adamantine luster Hardness of 2-2,5 specific gravity of 5.55-5.64. Usual crystal habit is prismatic to rhombohedral more commonly occurs massive. Conchoidal to uneven fracture transparent to translucent color, scarlet to vermilion red. Light sensitive must be kept in dark environment to maintain its primary character. A product of low-tcmpcraturc formation in most silver deposits. Notable world occurrences include the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Saxony, Chile and Mexico. Found in minor quantities in the United States the most exceptional occurrence at the Poorman Mine, Silver City District. Idaho where a crystalline mass of some 500 pounds (227 kilograms) was recovered m 1865, It was named for the famous French chemist, Louis Joseph Proust. [Pg.1378]

Most salts of silver are relatively insoluble in water, the important exceptions being the low-melting nitrate and perchlorate, AgN03 and AgCiCL, and silver fluoride, AgF. These, as well as many other silver salts, are colorless but certain of the silver salts with relatively polarizable anions (Chap. 3), besides being insoluble in water, are brightly colored. Thus the colorless sulfate, chloride, and fluohorate of silver may be compared to the yellow iodide, the red arsenate and chromate, and the black sulfide. [Pg.168]

POTASSIUM lODATE (7758-05-6) KIO, Noncombustible solid but many chemical reactions can cause fire and explosions. A strong oxidizer. Reacts violently with many materials, including reducing agents, hydrides, nitrides, and sulfides combustible materials, organic substances, manganese dioxide, arsenic, finely divided metals or carbon materials, hydrides of alkali or alkaline earth metalss, metal cyanides, metal thiocyanates, phosphonium iodide, red phosphorus, sulfides, sulfur, xenon tetrafluoride. Forms explosive compounds with solid organic matter. Mixture of powdered aluminum forms heat-, friction-, and shock-sensitive explosive. Attacks chemically active metals (e.g, aluminum, copper, zinc, etc.). Thermal deconposition, at temperatures above 1040°F/560°C, releases toxic iodine fumes. [Pg.892]
