Receptor antigenic determinants

The IgD profile in a normal Nigerian population was similar to that of the British and American populations (T7). Interestingly, in more than half the patients with African trypanosomes, IgD was absent from their sera (M35). Three out of six diabetic patients had insulin antibodies of the IgD class (D3), and IgD levels were five to six times higher in Ethiopian children than in Swedish children of the same age (J4). Patients with penicillin-induced hemolytic anemia had IgD receptors on their erythrocyte surfaces and sera from some subjects allergic to penicillin G were shown to have IgD antibodies specific for the benzyl-penicilloyl-antigenic determinant of this antibiotic (C19). 

Some properties of the interactions between antibodies or T-cell receptors and the molecules they bind are unique to the immune system, and a specialized lexicon is used to describe them. Any molecule or pathogen capable of eliciting an immune response is called an antigen. An antigen may be a virus, a bacterial cell wall, or an individual protein or other macromolecule. A complex antigen may be bound by a number of different antibodies. An individual antibody or T-cell receptor binds only a particular molecular structure within the antigen, called its antigenic determinant or epitope. 

A possible cause for the production of the damaging antibodies may be the sharing of common antigenic determinants between the receptor protein and surface proteins of bacteria such as E. coli/...

Surface properties are critical determinants of the metastatic behavior of malignant tumor cells. Adhesion molecules, proteolytic enzymes, antigenic determinants and hystocompatibiUty molecules, cytokine and growth factor receptors are all displayed on the cell surface, and known to play a specific role in the metastatic cascade. Therefore, selection of cell populations based on each and any of these properties can yield tumor cell sub-lines with varying metastatic capabilities.
