Lee Harris, in his book The Suicide of Reason (Harris, 2007), believes that Islamic fanaticism today represents a struggle for cultural survival in the face of a rapidly changing world. The inadequacy of the worst case model is evident and the statistical nature of the tolerance stack is more realistic, especially when including the effects of shifted distributions. This has also been the conclusion of some of the literature discussing tolerance stack models (Chase and Parkinson, 1991 Harry and Stewart, 1988 Wu et al., 1988). Shifting and drifting of component distributions has been said to be the chief reason for the apparent disenchantment with statistical tolerancing in manufacturing (Evans, 1975). Modern equipment is frequently composed of thousands of components, all of which interact within various tolerances. Failures often arise from a combination of drift conditions rather than the failure of a specific component. These are more difficult to predict and are therefore less likely to be foreseen by the designer (Smith, 1993). [Pg.130]

There were essentially three reasons for this opposition. Firstly, many macromolecular compounds in solution behave as colloids. Hence they were assumed to be identical with the then known inorganic colloids. This in turn implied that they were not macromolecular at all, but were actually composed of small molecules bound together by ill-defined secondary forces. Such thinking led the German chemist C. D. Harries to pursue the search for the rubber molecule in the early years of the twentieth century. He used various mild degradations of natural rubber, which he believed would destroy the colloidal character of the material and yield its constituent molecules, which were assumed to be fairly small. Typically, acid soils are titrated with a sodium or calcium hydroxide [NaOH or Ca(OH)2] solution and basic soils with hydrochloric acid (HC1), and pH changes are most commonly followed using a pH meter. Carbonates in basic soils release C02 during treatment with HC1, thus making the titration more difficult. For this reason, carbonates are often determined by other methods. It is important to keep in mind that basic solutions react with carbon dioxide in air and form insoluble carbonates. This means that either the basic titrant is standardized each day before use or the solution is protected from exposure to carbon dioxide in air. The bulk of potato tubers is made up of parenchyma cells that have thin, non-lignified, primary cell walls (Reeve et al., 1971 Bush et al, 1999, 2001 Parker et al., 2001). Unless stated to the contrary, potato cell walls refers to parenchyma cell walls. These walls and their component polysaccharides are important for a number of reasons they form part of the total intake of dietary fiber, influence the texture of cooked potato tubers and form much of the waste pulp that is produced in large amounts by the potato starch industry when starch is isolated. The pulp is usually used as cattle feed, but potentially could be processed in a variety of ways to increase its value (Mayer, 1998). For example, the whole cell-wall residues could be used as afood ingredient to alter food texture and to increase its dietary-fiber content, or cell-wall polysaccharides could be extracted and used in a similar way or for various industrial applications (Turquois et al., 1999 Dufresne et al, 2000 Harris and Smith, 2006 Kaack et al., 2006). [Pg.63]

The reactivity-selectivity relationship observed by Harris et al. (1973, 1974a) and illustrated in Fig. 10 provides additional support for this view. Thus 1-adamantyl, 2-adamantyl, and exo-2-norbonyl chlorides, which are hindered to back-side nucleophilic attack, show negative selectivity values. The reason for the negative selectivity value exhibited by 4,4 -dichlorodiphenylchloromethane and for its failure to conform to the reactivity-selectivity correlation is obscure.
