Re-use of waste

Appropriate process-integrated measures help to prevent or reduce the amount of waste from a polymer plant, which contains waste solvent, waste oil, polymer waxes and scrap, purification bed agents and catalyst residues. 

Waste solvent and oils can be used, where applicable, as cracker feedstock or as fuel. In some cases, concentrated polymer waxes can be sold as a by-product to the wax industry. Polymer scrap can be recycled. The usage of purification agents should be minimised through onhne regeneration and extended hfetime. Typically with the new generation of catalysts the efficiency is sufficiently high that catalyst residues can remain in the polymer, thus avoiding a catalyst wash step and the need to dispose of catalyst residues.

Re-use of waste water requires the installation of drains above the dyehouse floor for ease of access and possible segregation of effluent streams. - Provision should be planned for storage and distribution of treated efQuents suitable for reuse to selected machines. Each machine or machine section should have two entry ports so that alternative process water sources can be utilised. Re-use of waste water can be done in very different ways and depends on the sources and sinks as described previously.
