Rational phytotherapy can promote recovery from dys-bolism, normalize nervous system function, contribute to stabilization of blood pressure, improve coronary blood circulation and cerebral blood supply, help reduce insomnia and increase capacity for work. Herbal preparations promote excretion of toxic substances, help individuals to regain normal strength, increase energy metabolism and stop further disease progress during atherosclerosis and hypertension. 

The Ph. Eur. includes general monographs on herbal products herbal drugs, herbal drug preparations, extracts, herbal teas, essential oils. The Ph. Eur. contains (May 2013) 263 monographs on individual herbal drugs and herbal drug preparations. The science-based or evidence-based use of herbal medicinal products for the treatment and prevention of disease is called (rational) phytotherapy. 

Rational phytotherapy relies on active substances from plants. Classical essential oil-bearing medicinal plants are German chamomile Matricaria recutita), thyme Thymus vulgaris), peppermint Mentha x piperita), caraway Carum carvi), and fennel Foeniculum vulgare) [43, 47]. They are not only used to cure human disease but are of increasing interest in veterinary phytotherapy.
