Radiological Practices

For the general radiologist, pediatric radiology is not the most frequent part of his or her daily practice. In particular, the pediatric chest and abdomen, relatively common occurrences in a general radiology practice, are often cause for unease of approach and interpretation. 

It is generally agreed that viewing conditions should be included in a QC protocol. However, there are not many practical tools available that test all aspects of viewing or that easily link with perception in radiological practice. Further research is needed with regard to the most appropriate parameters to be tested. 

As transmission bandwidth is costiy it is useful to represent each image using as little bits as possible. Reversible (or lossless) compression methods look for patterns among the bits of the image that can be encoded more succinctiy. For example, if a number of adjacent pixels have the same value, this fact can be encoded using fewer bits than it takes to list those values a number of times. However, in radiological practice the gain is only moderate, about a factor of 2... 

In our experience, meeting the expectations of the patients has been more challenging. As a result, we have changed a lot about the way we practice and have carried these changes over to virtually all aspects of our interventional radiology practice. SNL maintains plans and procedures, as described in the RPPM (SNL 1998a), to control personnel radiation exposures. These include administrative limits, radiological practices, dosimetry, and respiratory protection. The SNUNM radiation-protection program for on-site exposures of personnel is described in the SNL RPPM. Radiation exposures to workers in special categories, such as those who have declared pregnancy and those who receive higher doses in emergency situations are strictly limited and monitored. 

This book will be of great value not only for general and pediatric radiologists, but also for pediatricians and pediatric orthopedic surgeons and will provide them with state-of-the-art information on this important part of daily radiological practice. 

Both benign and malignant focal liver lesions are extremely common and imaging the liver for focal lesions especially in cancer patients is one of the most frequent tasks in everyday radiological practice.
