Radiologic conversion

In the radon surveys the primary quantity determined is the indoor air mean radon activity concentration. From a radiological health perspective it is the dose arising from the inhalation of radon daughters that is of interest. The conversion from radon exposure to annualised effective dose equivalent for the survey was carried out using the factors given in Table I which are similar to those being used in other European surveys. Another report has provided more details from physical assessments and laboratory and radiological (MRI and MRS) data, and more information about the course of this heroin-related effect (21). The three cases showed raised concentrations of intracerebral lactate (reflecting mitochondrial dysfunction), which suggests a conversion of aerobic to anaerobic metabolism seen in hypoxic-ischemic conditions, including stroke. One patient recovered quite well after antioxidant therapy, supporting a metabolic effect of the heroin-related toxin a similar response to co-enzyme Q has been found in other mitochondrial disorders with a high CSF lactate. Thus, the authors recommended that although the role of antioxidant therapy in this condition is unclear, it may be prudent to administer oral co-enzyme Q supplemented with vitamins C and E to patients with this syndrome. 

The majority of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism have normal serum alkaline phosphatase values (Table 8). This test is therefore of little diagnostic significance. Serum alkaline phosphatase activities greater than twice the upper reference limit tend to be associated with radiological (D8, Ul) and histological (P36) evidence of parathyroid osteopathy. The converse is not true Histological examination of skeletal biopsy material may reveal bony lesions even when serum alkaline phosphatase values are within reference limits (P36). 

Other drugs that are useful in the rapid treatment of the severely thyrotoxic patient are agents that inhibit the peripheral conversion of thyroxine to triiodothyronine. Dexamethasone (0.5 to 1 mg two to four times daily), and the iodinated radiological contrast agents iopanoic acid (Telepaque, 500 to 1000 mg once daily), and sodium ipodate (Qragrafin, 500 to 1000 mg once daily) are effective in preoperative preparation. Neither iopanoic acid nor sodium ipodate is available in the United States. Cholestyramine has been used in severely toxic patients to bind thyroid hormones in the gut and thus block the enterohepatic circulation of the iodothyronines. 

The Th U cycle is attractive because it is based on the conversion of the relatively abundant element thorium into an isotope of uranium which has nuclear characteristics superior to those of in a thermal reactor. Since, unlike uranium, thorium in the natural state does not incorporate a thermally fissile isotope, the Th -U cycle has lagged behind that of XJ238 p 239 which was based on the automatic inclusion of the contained in natural uranium. In addition, the radiological problems involved in the handling of highly irradiated thorium are somewhat more severe than those encountered in the plutonium cycle.
