Radon surveys

In all of these indoor radon surveys positively skewed, approximately log-normal distributions are obtained. It should be noted that the local area survey may yield a different distribution from the national and thus estimates of numbers of high level houses in susceptible areas can be substantially underestimated from an aggregated national distribution. 

The target population for a survey is that set of elements about which the data will be used to make inferences. The target population for the national radon survey will be all occupied residential housing units in the United States which are used as primary residences. This will include both single and multi-family housing units. The survey will not include schools, workplaces, group quarters (dormitories, institutions, rooming houses, etc.), seasonal units, or unoccupied units.

The Finnish Centre for Radiation and Nuclear Safety is continuously conducting indoor radon surveys of dwellings. Already, the results from about 4500 houses are in our data register, and the number will be doubled this year. The present paper gives some new results of analyses of our data, an updated version of the previously published map of geographical distribution, and some of the principles of our monitoring strategy.

In the radon surveys the primary quantity determined is the indoor air mean radon activity concentration. From a radiological health perspective it is the dose arising from the inhalation of radon daughters that is of interest. The conversion from radon exposure to annualised effective dose equivalent for the survey was carried out using the factors given in Table I which are similar to those being used in other European surveys. The national indoor air radon survey commenced in the autumn of 1985. In this first phase of the work radon detectors were sent to 400 randomly selected households throughout Ireland, A further 400 households are scheduled to receive detectors by the end of April 1986. At the time of writing radon detectors from a total of 220 households have been recovered and processed. The principal results obtained are shown in Table II, together with the results of the earlier pilot survey and the cumulative results for both sets of data.
