FIGURE 44.1 Fluorescently labeled polystyrene particles gathered in the pressure nodal plane (in plane with the image focus) of an acoustic standing wave by the primary acoustic radiation force in a 70 xm deep microchannel. The microbeads are also clustered in a dense hexagonal pattern by Bjerknes forces. [Pg.1232]

Every method, with the exception of imaging technologies, provides the measurement of an equivalent spherical diameter in one form or another. The spherical diameter information can be deduced indirectiy from the behavior of the particles passing through restricted volumes or channels under the influence of gravity or centrifugal force fields, and from interaction with many forms of radiation. [Pg.130]

The major driving force for the development of technetium coordination chemistry has undoubtedly been the potential applications in diagnostic nuclear medicine. The primary requirements for a radionuclide to be used in imaging are that the radiation emitted must be of appropriate energy, the decay half-life must lie in a suitable time window, it must be relatively cheap and readily available in the radiopharmacy, and finally it must have highly flexible co-ordination chemistry. [Pg.245]

In this section, we present a few examples of instruments available for visual observation and imaging of colloids and surfaces, for measurement of sizes and for surface force measurements. Such a presentation can hardly be comprehensive in fact, that is not our purpose here. Throughout the book, we discuss numerous other techniques such as osmotic pressure measurements, light and other radiation scattering techniques, surface tension measurements,... [Pg.38]

Besides spectroscopic techniques such as infrared-reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), SFM-based stiffness imaging was applied in order to detect radiation-induced variations of surface stiffness [180]. For that purpose, when exposing the PE-film to the VUV-radiation, the film was covered with a Ni mesh. Thus, the PE-film was partially masked and exposed to the VUV radiation only within the square-shaped holes of the mesh. After having finished that treatment and having removed the mesh, the sample surface was scanned in force modula-... [Pg.121]

The inventions of the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) [16] and the atomic force microscope (AFM) [17] have allowed sub-micrometre and, at times, atomic-scale spatially-resolved imaging of surfaces. Spatially-resolved temperature measurements using optical systems are diffraction limited by the wavelength of the radiation involved, which is about 5-10 pm for infrared thermography and about 0.5 pm for visible light [18]. The spatial resolution of near-field techniques (such as AFM) is only limited by the active area of the sensor (which in the case of STM may be only a few atoms at the end of a metal wire). [Pg.57]
