RADAR measurement

In the example shown a covermeter is used to detennine the distance to a known single bar, and this information is in turn used to establish a reference for the radar measurements. A wave speed of 110 m/ps is calculated for this concrete. 

Radar measurements of the Leonid meteor shower have measured entry velocities of order 70 kms-1. Routinely, the Earth passes through the debris left in space by periodic comets to produce beautiful meteor showers such as the Leonid (Figure 6.1), with observation rates as high as 100 meteors per hour.

In order to complement the results of the radar backscatter measurements on the open sea, laboratory measurements of the wave amplitude and slope and of the radar backscatter at X- and Ka-band were carried out in a wind-wave tank with mechanically generated gravity waves as well as with wind-generated waves on a slick-free and a slick-covered water surface. In this paper, we concentrate on the results of the radar measurements with wind-generated waves. For a full description of the obtained results the reader is referred to Gade et al. (1998c).

One of the most important atmospheric dynamical quantities is the zonal wind (wind speed in the longitudinal direction). Wind velocities are conventionally positive for eastward winds (also called westerlies) and negative for westward winds (easterlies). They are mostly derived from the observed thermal structure of the atmosphere, although local values can be provided by radiosonde and radar measurements. To date, very few attempts have been made to directly measure the atmospheric wind components from space.
