Quality and Environmental Aspects

In the early 1990s, chemical companies recognized the need to take a fresh look at the safety, quality, and environmental aspects related to the provision of logistics services. Within the framework of the Responsible Care Programme, initiatives were started that have since evolved into a number of safety and quality assessment systems (SQAS), each related to a particular transport mode or logistics operation. 

The objectives of the initiator can be divided into two categories business economics and environmental aspects. Co-combustion should not result in an increased unavailability or a reduction of the quality aspects of the by-products, such as fly ash, that could reduce the value or even the utilisation possibilities of the byproducts and lead to lower electricity production costs.

The International Joint Commission (U.S.-Canada) under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement undertook a safety review of detergent builders which encompassed both human health and environmental aspects. The Task Force on the Health Effects of Non-NTA Detergent Builders of the IJC s Great Lakes Science Advisory Board concluded that "the use of sodium silicate in detergents poses no hazard to man" ( ). A separate Task Force on the Ecological Effects of Phosphate Replacements has not yet issued a report, but it is understood to have concluded that there is no cause for concern ( 5).

After addressing some of the limitations of feed evaluation in the remaining part of this paper, we will focus on some non-classical aspects of feed value and their inclusion in feed evaluation and diet preparation. To include new characteristics in feed evaluation, it is necessary to establish their effect on relevant response traits and develop a system to describe the response and quantify the effect of different feed ingredients. A comparison between nanofiltration and pellet softening [combined with granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption for organics removal] was made by Sombekke et al. (1997), based on a hfe-cycle analysis (LCA). Both treatment schemes were found to have a comparable impact, except that NF was advantageous for quality and health aspects. Other positive aspects for NF were the investments and costs, and the impact on the landscape. The main environmental impact for both alternatives is caused by the use of energy. The Water Supply Company of Overijssel (WMO), The Netherlands, decided to extend current treatment capacity with nanofiltration on the basis of this LCA.

Much attention has been given in recent years to the environmental aspects of both the drilling operation and the drilling fluid components.
