The public health movement to protect people arose in England during the nineteenth century in response to exceedingly high rates of death and disease amidst appalling environmental conditions in cities and factories (dark satanic mills) as society was reorganized along industrial lines. 

The specific educational disciplines of health service researchers are reflected in the wide variety of journals that now publish health research manuscripts. Pharmacy journals also contain some HSR articles, including the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, Annals of Pharmacotherapy, and Pharmacotherapy.
