In our hands, a fruit extract of M volkensii proved to be a potent antifeedant and larval growth inhibitor to both the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni (Noctuidae) and the army worm, Pseudaletia unipuncta (Noctuidae). However, unlike the armyworm, the looper is capable of habituating to the extract, i.e. feeding deterrence diminishes following continuous exposure."...

Additional research from our laboratory shows that several essential oils possess antifeedant and oviposition deterrent effects. In particular, thymol, the major constituent of thyme oil, has been shown to be a deterrent to the lepidopteran pest species Plutdla icylostella and Pseudaletia unipuncta. It should be noted that larvae experienced with thymol showed reduced deterrence, suggesting that repeated application of feeding deterrent cherrticals in the field could limit their effectiveness...
