Proteomics recent advances

The 1990s was devoted to the faster development of genomics. However, it seems that the first decade of the new millennium will become the decade of proteomics. Recent advances in proteomic research have made it possible to generate quantitative data on protein expression that is compatible to those obtained at genomic level, with respect to sensitivity, specificity, and scale. Proteomics has begun yielding important findings that may advance major implications in the areas of pharmaceutics and medicine. [Pg.137]

Recent advances in genomic and proteomic research have exponentially increased the number of potential protein therapeutic molecules that may be used for unmet therapeutical needs. However, to fully understand the therapeutical potential of these substances, a parallel development should be made in protein delivery technologies. These new technologies presumably offer the ability to overcome biochemical and anatomical barriers to protein drug transport, without overcoming adverse events, to deliver the drug(s) at a favorable rate and duration, to protect... [Pg.136]

More recently, advances in electrospray technology have helped to look further into proteomics via non-covalent interactions between proteins (Gaskell, 1997). Pramanik etal. (1998) have reviewed the ability of ESI to study... [Pg.338]

Recent advances in proteomics methodologies make them a promising strategy for food science studies and are used by research institutions, industries, agencies, and regulatory laboratories, combining efforts to acquire the needed knowledge on food composition, quality, and safety. Very useful reviews on proteomics applications in food science have been recently published (9,10). [Pg.203]

In spite of these limitations, 2-D was first used nearly 20 years ago to compare the protein composition of fibro-fatty lesions with lesion-free segments of the human aortic intima (Stastny et al., 1986a,b). Although these studies were performed before important recent advances in proteomics, including sophisticated quanti-... [Pg.307]

Recent advancements in genomics and proteomics have generated considerable interest in the discovery and validation of biomarkers in mechanism-based drug development [69-71], These advances have been welcomed to reduce the cost, increase success rates, and accelerate timelines in the drug discovery and development process. Herein, a brief overview of the application of biological markers in early discovery, development, toxicological assessments, and efficacy studies in humans is presented. [Pg.630]

Na channel P subunits, the Drosophila Na channel auxiliary subunit TipE, and the P subunits of voltage-gated K and Ca channels have similar functions in terms of modulation of channel activity (Adelman 1995, Isom et al 1994, Warmke et al 1997). As will be discussed below, however, only the mammalian Na channel P subunits also function as cell adhesion molecules (CAMs). What other proteins associate with Na channels and contribute to the ion conduction proteome in excitable cells How is Na channel function affected by these associated proteins and by the local cellular environment Recent advances, outlined below, have begun to answer these important questions in channel biology. [Pg.125]
