Law of definite proportion-. Elements always combine to form compounds in fixed proportions by mass. 

Every organic compound contains the element carbon together with one or more of the other elements in the periodic table, in definite proportions. Elemental analysis serves to measure the proportion of each element present in the compound. Thus, when a new compound is synthesized in the laboratory or when an unknown compound is obtained from nature, the product is isolated and carefully purified. Milligram amounts of the pure sample are subjected to elemental analysis. The percentage of every element is separately determined if necessary, and the sum of all elements should total 100%. In this way the composition of the synthetic compound is confirmed, while an unknown compound is characterized by the quantitative relationship of its constituents and its empirical formula can be deduced. 

There can be an element of maintenance costs that is fixed and an element which is variable. Fixed maintenance costs cover routine maintenance such as regular maintenance on safety valves which must be carried out irrespective of the rate of production. There also can be an element of maintenance costs which is variable. This arises from the fact that certain items of equipment can need more maintenance as the production rate increases. Also, royalties which cover the cost of purchasing another company s process technology may have different bases. Royalties may be a variable cost, since they can sometimes be paid in proportion to the rate of production. Alternatively, the royalty might be a single-sum payment at the beginning of the project. In this case, the single-sum payment will become part of the project s capital investment. As such, it will be included in the annual capital repayment, and this becomes part of the fixed cost.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), also called electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), is described in section Bl.25,2.1. More connnon are reports of the differential Raman cross-section, doj /dQ, which is proportional to the intensity of the scattered radiation that falls within the element of solid angle dQ when viewing along a direction that is to be specified [H]. Its value depends on the design of the Raman scattering experiment.
