Artificial membranes are used to study the influence of drug structure and of membrane composition on drug-membrane interactions. Artificial membranes that simulate mammalian membranes can easily be prepared because of the readiness of phospholipids to form lipid bilayers spontaneously. They have a strong tendency to self-associate in water. The macroscopic structure of dispersions of phospholipids depends on the type of lipids and on the water content. The structure and properties of self-assembled phospholipids in excess water have been described [74], and the mechanism of vesicle (synonym for liposome) formation has been reviewed [75]. While the individual components of membranes, proteins and lipids, are made up of atoms and covalent bonds, their association with each other to produce membrane structures is governed largely by hydrophobic effects. The hydrophobic effect is derived from the structure of water and the interaction of other components with the water structure. Because of their enormous hydrogen-bonding capacity, water molecules adopt a structure in both the liquid and solid state. [Pg.19]

The foregoing discussion has focused on self-assembled monolayers formed on essentially flat electrode surfaces whose areas are vastly larger than those occupied by a single adsorbate. This field has now achieved a significant level of sophistication in terms of their structural characterization as well as their rational design for specific functions, e.g. chemically modulated switches. Although somewhat outside the scope of this book, another important area that exploits the unique properties of self-assembled monolayers is monolayer-protected metal clusters or nanoparticles. [Pg.194]

Abstract Phthalocyanines represent a versatile class of functional dyes which have found applications in various disciplines ranging from materials science, catalysis, nanotechnology to medicine. The intrinsic properties of the macrocycles as well as their molecular arrangements, both in solution and in the condensed phase, can be altered through rational chemical modification. Conjugation of other functional units to phthalocyanines can also complement the characteristics of the macrocycles. All these approaches can improve the performance of these macro-cyclic compounds as advanced functional materials. The purpose of this article is to provide an up-to-date review of the current research status of phthalocyanine-containing supramolecular systems. The formation, structures, and properties of self-assembled phthalocyanines as well as the non-covalent hetero-arrays containing phthalocyanines and other functional units are reviewed herein. [Pg.169]

The reactivity and catalysis represent one of the most important features of the functional properties of self-assembled molecular systems 1221. The presence of the large cavity in 3 motivated us to test its ability to catalyze the oxidation of styrene and isomerization of allylbenzene 1231. When 1 and 2 were mixed in D2O in a 4 2 ratio, formation of only 3 was observed and excess 1 remained in the solution. Our strategy was to use this excess of 1 as a mediator between the organic and the aqueous phase. That is to use it to cyclically and continuously transfer the substrate into the aqueous phase that contains 3 and then the... [Pg.187]
