In addition to simple small-molecule and polymeric self-assembly of small molecules onto polymers, macromolecules themselves are capable of undergoing selforganization to form higher ordered materials. There are several occasions on which this type of organization has been employed, ranging from the variations in polymer morphology that occur upon changes in composition [113-116] to self-assembly of dendrimers onto functionalized surfaces [117-121]. [Pg.287]

Multiscale ordering of functional colloidal nanoparticles is a powerful technique for the creation of macroscopic devices. This can be performed via selective polymerization, self-assembly processes, or through controlled molecular recognition processes (Fig. 4). Further assembly between NBB is addressed following three main strategies, namely, electrostatic coupling, covalent, or self-assembly-based noncovalent binding. [Pg.1275]

Polymeric self-assembled structures via Tl- O association have been identified in dimethylthallium(III) acetate, Me2T100CMe, 110, dimethylthallium(III) tropolo-nate, 111, dimethylthallium(III) acetylacetonate, 112 [337], and the diethyl-thallium(III) salicylaldehyde derivative 113 [338]. [Pg.142]

Polymeric self-assembly occurs in 1,2,5-telluradiazole, 232 [533] and in phenanthro[9,10c]-l,2,5-telluradiazole (Te---N 2.834 A) [534], but di-(terf-butyl)-benzotelluradiazole associates only as dimers, 233 [535], The parent telluradiazole is a high-melting solid, poorly soluble in organic solvents, because of strong inter-molecular bonds [536]. [Pg.302]

Polymeric self-assembly has frequently been observed in the chemistry of alkali metal alkoxides and related compounds. Not discussed here are simple alkoxides and thiolates such as MOMe (202, M = Li-Cs) [162-167], MOPr (203, M = K-Cs) [168], and MSMe (204, M = Li-K) [169]. They form layered structures in the... [Pg.410]

Two types of polymeric self-assembled structures have been reported for alkali metal derivatives of bulky phenoxide and thiophenolate ligands zigzag chains and ladder polymers. The former have been found in the sodium thiophenolates [Na(SC6H2PF3-2,4,6)(thf)] , 196, (spectroscopic evidence only), [Na(SCgH2Pr 3-... [Pg.412]

A recently reported example of a polymeric self-assembled alkali earth metallocene is the THF adduct of bis(indenyl)strontium, [Sr( / -C7H9)(THF)] , 34 [29]. In the solid state this compound forms an infinite coordination polymer in which each strontium atom is coordinated by a terminal indenyl and THF ligand. Approximately tetrahedral geometry around the metal center results from an additional association with two bridging indenyl moieties. [Pg.433]

The spherical micelles (Fig. 2.1) are the most extensively studied polymeric self-assembled stmctures. They represent the simplest and most widespread aggregate morphology. Cylindrical micelles as well as polymer vesicles (poly-mersomes) are less frequently observed (Fig. 2.1), whereas complex stmctures such as toroids, helices, multicore and multicompartment micelles, disks, tubules are considered as more or less exotic stmctures. Worth mentioning is the phenomenon of coexisting morphologies, which is believed to derive from a number of inherent for the synthetic copolymers characteristics, e.g., dispersity in molar mass. [Pg.20]

Besides the critical aggregation concentration, temperature or pH and specific morphology, the polymeric self-assembled stmctures are characterized by particle molar mass and aggregation number, dimensional parameters such as hydrodynamic radius, radius of the core or membrane thickness for the polymersomes and disk-like micelles, radius of the cylindrical micelles and thickness of the corona, radius of gyration. A distinctive feature of the polymeric self-assembled particles is the core-corona stmcture. Both, the core and corona, can be considered as separate entities which are able to accommodate active substances of appropriate nature and to serve as... [Pg.20]
