Make the model for the structural formula of propene, using the simplified C=C for the double bond, but remembering that double bonds are planar o-bonds at 120 degrees to each other with rr-bonds above and below the C-C sigma bonds (see also Section 2.2.4)... [Pg.292]

The simple structure of ethene (C2H4) does not permit any variations, nor does the full structural formula of propene shown in Figure 6.4.22. [Pg.329]

Problem 8.2 Interpret the structural formula of propene applying the model above to the chemical formula C3H6 and knowing that one CC bond is appreciably longer than the other. [Pg.176]

Iv) Write the structural formula of the product of the reaction of propene with cold, alkaline potassium permanganate. [Pg.321]

Ethene, written as H2C=CH2 or CH2=CH2, and propene, CH3CH=CH2, are the first two members of the alkene family. These two alkenes are often called by their common names, ethylene and propylene, respectively. They are two of the most important chemicals produced by the chemical industry in the United States. Ethylene is used in the production of polyethylene, one of the most useful plastics produced, and in the production of ethylene glycol, the principal ingredient in most antifreeze. Propylene is used in the production of isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and some plastics. Figure 14-7 shows a couple of ways to represent the structural formula of ethene (ethylene). [Pg.239]

We represent double and triple bonds in structural formulas with double or triple lines. For example, we draw the structural formulas for (propene) and C3H4 (propyne) as follows ... [Pg.956]

Chemists can give more detail about a molecule by giving its structural formula. This tells us about the atoms bonded to each carbon atom in the molecule. The structural formula of propene is CH3HC=CH2 (also written as... [Pg.200]

Draw a Lewis formula and a three-dimensional structure for each of the following polycentered molecules. Indicate hybridizations and bond angles at each carbon atom, (a) butane, C4H3Q (b) propene, H2C=CHCH3 (c) 1-butyne, HC=CCH2CH3 (d) acetaldehyde, CH3CHO. [Pg.349]

When trying to estimate the hydrocarbon family from the molecular formula, there is a ratio that indicates the alkenes. With the aUcene family, there are twice as many hydrogen atoms as carbons. Propene has three carbons 3 x 2 = 6, so there are three carbon atoms and six hydrogen atoms in propene (CjHg). In the case of alkenes that have more than one double bond, the ratio does not work. It is better to look at a molecular formula and draw out the structure rather than to try to guess from the ratio of the molecular formula. While the ratios work most of the time, there are exceptions, such as the two and three double-bonded compounds. [Pg.132]

In the previous work [9] we have investigated ethene and propene metathesis reactions proceeding on molybdenaalkylidene centres. In the present work density functional study on ethene metathesis reaction proceeding on molybdenamethylidene centres of M0O3/AI2O3 catalyst is reported. Two variants of theoretical models of the active sites have been applied. In the first case, simple structures of the carbene and molybdacyclobutane complexes, in which hydroxyl groups replace the bonds between molybdenum and the carrier, are proposed. In the second case, molybdenum is attached to a small cluster of formula Al2(OH)6, which represents alumina. [Pg.483]

Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons that contain a C=C bond. The simplest alkene is CH2=CH2, call ethene (lUPAC) or ethylene. Ethylene is a plant hormone. It plays important roles in seed germination and fruit ripening. The next member of the series is CH3—CH=CH2, called propene or propylene. For alkenes with four or more carbon atoms, several isomers exist for eadi molecular formula. For example, there are four isomers of C4HR, as shown in Figure 25.10 . Notice bofli their structures and their names. [Pg.994]

Alkenes are the second hydrocarbon family. Alkenes have one or more double bonds between the carbons in the structure of the compound. The gases ethene (ethylene), propene (propylene), and butene (butylene) were discussed in Chapter 4. The first flammable liquid in the alkene family is pentene. Because it is an alkene, it has a double bond in the compound. Pentene has a boihng point of 86°F, a flash point of 0°F, a flammable range of 1.5 to 8.7%, and an ignition temperature of 527°F. The structure and formula for pentene is shown in Figure 5.35. [Pg.227]
