Project killing

The goal of all economic evaluations should be to eliminate all unprofitable projects. Some borderline, and perhaps a few good projects, will be killed along with the bad ones. However, it is much better to pass up several good projects than to build one loser. [Pg.240]

Parts of the tank were projected to distances up to 360 m (1200 ft). Twenty-two pieces of the tank were recovered, constituting approximately 80% of the original tank. Debris was found clustered in two separate areas, namely, within the radii of 5° to 20° and 65° to 95° from the car s direction of movement. Three empty tank cars located up to a distance of three railroad tracks from the exploded car were blown from the rails. The undercarriage of the car was bent into a V-shape (see Figure 2.1). One person was killed in the explosion. Analysis of a recovered piece of the tank car showed that failure was due to brittle fracture. [Pg.27]

Wind power has been slowed by public opposition. In 2002, a citizen s group in Prince Edward County, Ontario, vetoed a small windfarm project on the coast of Lake Ontario near Hillier. They proposed that the 22 proposed wind turbines would be noisy, kill birds and harm the neighborhood by being too visible. These are common complaints about wind-farms, but at a distance of about 200 meters, the sound of a windfarm is faint. At closer distances the noise is similar to the sound of an airplane s engine from inside the cabin. Even under the spinning blades it is possible to converse in a normal voice. One Dutch study showed that a small wind-farm is less harmful to birds than 1-kilometer of road or powerlines. [Pg.211]

The chemical product used in the design project (chapter 12) is a household appliance designed to deliver clean air by removing and killing airborne microorganisms, and converting carbon monoxide and common VOCs found indoor into harmless carbon dioxide and water. It also dehumidifies indoor air and maintains a comfortable humidity level that suppresses fungal proliferation. The appliance is intended to maintain its performance without maintenance for at least two years and is expected to have a functional life of at least five years. The product contains an active formulation of (1) low temperature oxidation catalyst, (2) VOCs adsorbent and (c) desiccant. [Pg.17]

This presents the quick snapshot of how I came to life. The real story — of how I work, how I cure a disease, and how I can kill — fills volumes of binders. Also lying buried somewhere in those volumes are the scientific rivalries, intellectual property fights, failed departmental projections, and nervous notes from bankers. [Pg.338]

Royer, I. 2003. Why bad projects are so hard to kill. Harvard Business Review, 81(2) 49-56. [Pg.171]

Any one of them could have killed me outright. But no I was preserved, and the triumph of our company s project was complete." Describing the start up of a tin mine as a triumph seemed a bit overblown to me, but it was clear that I was in the presence of one intense dude. [Pg.141]

People attempting to read The Arcades Project ssQ nearly gone mad in their quests, which can take several years. Before he killed himself, Benj amin destroyed his copy of the manuscript, and for decades the work was believed lost. Luckily, scholars found a copy, and today the work is available atAmazon.com. [Pg.137]

Several varieties of suckerfish apparently migrated into Upper Klamath Lake at some time during the Klamath Basin project. As of1970, the official count of Lost River suckerfish was unknown, and the shortnose suckerfish was very rare. By 1976, estimates rose to 94,000 Lost River suckerfish and 252,000 shortnose suckerfish. Since then, suckerfish kills have taken place during years of high water levels—1995, 1996, and 1997—and by 1997, the suckerfish populations were estimated to have declined about 50 percent to 46,000 Lost River suckerfish and 146,000 shortnose suckerfish. There were no suckerfish kills in 1992 and 1994, when water levels in the lake were low. In only three years since 1991... [Pg.98]

Kenneth A. Pickar, California Institute of Technology One of the realities of managing portfolios is the immortal project that is almost impossible to kill. You think you ve terminated it, and then you find out that it popped up in some other guise somewhere else in practice on the side. Sometimes these projects turn out to be great discoveries, but far more often they are really a terrible drain on resources. What type of special advice or ideas do you have for killing the immortal ... [Pg.25]

The Lisha Kill Natural Area was one of the passions and delights of his life. He raised the funds to buy the land for the Nature Conservancy, laid out, marked and maintained the trails, and supervised the project for over forty years. [Pg.696]
