The "SIMON" Project ("On-line acoustic monitoring of structural integrity of critical power plant components operating at high temperatures") had a duration of 4 years (1.10.1993 -30.09.1997) the Project Consortium included CISE (Project Coordinator, I), MITSUI BABCOCK ENERGY (UK), HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY (IK), PROET / EDP (P) and ENEL (I).

When embarking on the implementation of a regulatory computerized system, it is recommended that the project managers appoint an individual to act as the validation project coordinator. The involvement of the validation coordinator on a project will vary depending on the size of project. For a small project, the validation coordinator role may require only a part-time assignment. For a large project, the validation coordinator role may require the assignment of a full-time person. 

The analysis methods described here have highlighted some of the systematic features in the predictive properties of several of the commonly used atomic mass models. Additional understanding of these features and the availability of many new atomic masses for isotopes far from the stability line will serve as a basis for improving the models. The need clearly exists for a comprehensive revision and update of the mass predictions. A project, coordinated by the author, has been started to accomplish this. It is expected that new sets of mass predictions from a number of groups may be available late in 1986. 

The motivation and dedication of the laboratories participating in the various interlaboratory studies and certifications organised by BCR represent one of the keys to the success of the projects with a clear impact on the improvement of quality control of speciation measurements. All project coordinators and participants in the projects are gratefully acknowledged and are listed in the RSC book on speciation (Quevauviller, 1998b). 

At the end of 2001, a project, coordinated by LNE (Laboratoire National d Essais), one of the four French Institutes of Metrology, was initiated to evaluate the possible benefits of the implementation of a metrological structure for environmental analyses. This project was granted by the French Ministry of Research (Direction of Technology), under the acronym of METREAU (for Metrology of Water). It was conducted in the framework of RITEAU, a network of innovative technological developments in the field of water.
