The comparison with full Cl results provides the best test of approximate methods since the errors introduced by the approximations then become immediately obvious. Carbon Dioxide Transport. Measuring the permeation of carbon dioxide occurs far less often than measuring the permeation of oxygen or water. A variety of methods ate used however, the simplest method uses the Permatran-C instmment (Modem Controls, Inc.). In this method, air is circulated past a test film in a loop that includes an infrared detector. Carbon dioxide is appHed to the other side of the film. AH the carbon dioxide that permeates through the film is captured in the loop. As the experiment progresses, the carbon dioxide concentration increases. First, there is a transient period before the steady-state rate is achieved. The steady-state rate is achieved when the concentration of carbon dioxide increases at a constant rate. This rate is used to calculate the permeabiUty. Figure 18 shows how the diffusion coefficient can be deterrnined in this type of experiment. The time lag is substituted into equation 21. The solubiUty coefficient can be calculated with equation 2. 

Much progress needs to be achieved before in vitro tests could indeed replace the use of animals in immunotoxicology. Furthermore, there is a need for research to develop in vivo as well as in vitro models to detect autoimmunity and immunostimulation. 

Considerable progress in evaluation of novel DcNOr adsorber catalysts can be achieved by applying a 48-fold reactor system for catalyst development with dynamic operation enabling testing of up to 1000 catalysts in just 1 month. 

Currently, more than 400 human somatic cell gene therapy protocols are being tested. Most of these involve the use of genetically modified cells to treat noninherited diseases. For example, normal copies of the p53 tumor suppressor gene are inserted into lung tumors to halt tumor progression, and genetically modified cells have been used to create new coronary vessels in patients with coronary heart disease. Success has also been achieved in the treatment of hereditary disease (most notably, the recent successful treatment of X-linked severe combined immune deficiency see Clinical Correlate).
