Progression factor

Progression factors, which result in a faster decline in kidney function and cause worsening of CKD. These factors may also be modified by pharmacologic therapy or lifestyle modifications to slow the progression of CKD. 

Progression factors can be used as predictors of CKD. The most important predictors of CKD include proteinuria, elevated blood pressure, hyperglycemia, and tobacco smoking. 

Progression factors hasten decline in kidney function after initiation of kidney damage. Progression factors include glycemia in diabetics, hypertension, proteinuria, and smoking.

Since the development of CKD is a complex phenomenon, the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (K/DOQI) has recommended categorizing risk factors associated with CKD as susceptibility, initiation, and progression factors. 

The degree of polymerization is seen to show the same dependence on the geometric-progression factor as in step-growth polymerization of bifunctional monomers (eqn 11.16) and radical polymerization with chain breaking by disproportionation or terminating chain transfer (eqn 11.42).
