Although not a very recent development, measurement of U-series isotopes by gamma spectrometry is worth a mention here because of its increasing application to the dating of bones. About 50 mg, or less, of bone is required for a TIMS U-series measurement, although a bone section is required if profiles are to be measured for the application of the D-A model. Understandably, museum curators are reluctant to allow the most valuable specimens to be cut or drilled, so the non-destructive measurement of a U-series date is extremely advantageous. [Pg.617]

NRA is a powerful method of obtaining concentration versus depth profiles of labelled polymer chains in films up to several microns thick with a spatial resolution of down to a few nanometres. This involves the detection of gamma rays produced by irradiation by energetic ions to induce a resonant nuclear reaction at various depths in the sample. In order to avoid permanent radioactivity in the specimen, the energy of the projectile is maintained at a relatively low value. Due to the large coulomb barrier around heavy nuclei, only light nuclei may be easily identified (atomic mass < 30). [Pg.209]

As an alternative, equation 19.4-38 may be solved using the E-Z Solve software to obtain the concentration profiles. The gamma function can be evaluated by numerical integration using the user-defined functions gamma, fjrateqn, and rkint provided within the software. [Pg.481]

It was found that decomposition is in part due to transesterification and that substitution increases stability. The effect of gamma radiation on aspirin has been described.184 The pH stability profile of aspirin according to Edwards has been made the subject of a student experiment.185... [Pg.32]

Method of Determining Foam Levels. A gamma ray transmission technique was used to determine liquid levels and density profiles and also to establish the presence of foam in vessels and pipework... [Pg.118]

Profiles of foam density, derived from gamma ray scans of the separators, showed that no discrete foam layer was in the vessels, but a two-phase mixture of gas and liquid occupied a substantial pan of the total height of the vessel. [Pg.119]

Foam densities were determined by use of gamma ray absorption to determine the amount of crude carried over in the foam. Under severe conditions, foam densities between 15.6 and 33.7 Ibm/cu ft (250 and 540 kg/m3 were measured, compared with a crude density of 50 6 Ibm cu 4 ft (810 kg. m11 Thus the crude content of the loam was between 28 and 66% by volume. Furthermore, up to 900 tonnes/hr (900 Mg/h], or 50%, of the crude fed to a separator could be carried over in foam Profiles of foam density and carry-over were similar for both the HP and LP separators. [Pg.120]

With the above equipment, it was demonstrated exptly that a 30-mil (0.030,f) gap can be detected using rigidly controlled lab conditions with a mock projectile and an artificially induced separation. This technique was also tested with 100 fully loaded projectiles. The presence of an actual base separation was not positively identified in this very small sampling of shells. However, two projectiles showed abnormal gamma-ray scan profiles. Upon sectioning, these indicated the presence of anomalies at the base region. The method is concluded to be sufficiently sensitive to detect... [Pg.119]
