The promotion of medicines to the general public for self medication is covered by the Code of Standards of Advertising Practice for Over-the-Counter Medicines of the Proprietary Association of Great Britain (PAGE). The PAGE also has a Code of Practice for Advertising Over-the-Counter Medicines to Health Professionals and the Retail Trade. 

A modest but not significant inverse correlation between the intake of flavonols and flavones and subsequent mortality rates was found in a prospective cohort study of US Health Professionals by Rimm et al [206]. The authors do not exclude that flavonoids have a protective effect in men with established coronary heart disease although strong evidence was missing. Also other studies failed to demonstrate a significant statistical association between the intake of polyphenols and CHD. In Great Britain for instance coronary and total mortality even rose with the intake of the major flavonol source, tea [207], The most likely explanation for the latter observation is that in this study tea consumption merely acted as a marker for a lifestyle that favours the development of cardiovascular disease. Requirements are laid down for the registration of pharmacies, cind responsibility for their inspection, certain monitoring and other provisions is granted to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, the professional body representing pharmacists in the UK. 

A useful reference source on OTC medicines is supplied by manufacturers who are members of the Proprietary Association of Great Britain. The Directory is distributed widely to health professionals. 

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain s Professional Standards and Guidance for the Sale and Supply of Medicines ((2) Supply of Over The Counter (OTC) Medicines) states that When purchasing medicines from pharmacies patients expect to be provided with high quality, relevant information in a manner they can easily understand. With this in mind, whenever P medicines are sold from a pharmacy the sale must be made under the supervision of a pharmacist. All medicines counter assistants who regularly deal with requests for medicines must be trained. The training of assistants in pharmacies should be such that they will request information from the purchaser to ensure that the condition is suitable for self-medication and the product requested by the patient or suggested by the assistant is appropriate. The society was founded in October 1911 as the United Society of Casualty Inspectors. This nonprofit organization is the only organization of individual safety professionals. It works to promote the safety profession and foster the professional development of its members. The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) plays an important role in the development of safety standards. The society continues to expand its focus in the United States and also operates chapters in the Middle East and Great Britain. A 25-member board of directors that includes 13 regional vice presidents guides the ASSE. The society operates 138 chapters to promote, establish, and maintain standards for the safety profession. 

Initial response action can be carried out by the ship s crew, whose effectiveness depends on their professional competence and that of the captain. It may be excellent, as seen during the Multitank Ascania (Great Britain) incident before they abandoned ship, or a disaster, as seen in the incident during the unloading of the sulfuric acid from the Bahamas (Brazil). 

Many countries possess professional landscape architecture institutes and agencies that are responsible for the promotion and regulation of the profession. Such institutes include the Gormcil of Landscape Ar-chitecmral Registration Boards in the United States and Canada, the Landscape Institute in Great Britain, the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects, and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects. 

Other certification plans are available in Canada, Great Britain, South Africa, and elsewhere. Professional certification in health and safety should not be viewed as a measure of professional effectiveness but as a base measure of technical competence.
