Inevitably, in all reactions between achiral reaction partners—hence also in many additions in this chapter—chiral products occur as racemic mixtures. That part of Figure 3.5, which states just this, is therefore trivial. Moreover, it tends to distract from the essential information. In order to focus on the latter, in general, equations for such reactions are written so that only different diastereomers are depicted, though it is understood that these diastereomers occur as racemic mixtures. Thus Figure 3.6 is the shorthand documentation of what Figure 3.5 presented in much more detail. The same shorthand notations will be used in this chapter and in the remainder of the book. 

The effects of biochemical use are at various folds, but the major direct substation of biochemicals for petrochemicals is found at the upstream of chemical production processes. For instance, the oil distraction from crops is far less harmful than the oil extraction from petroleum. In the case of phenol, making phenol from plants is estimated to generate 80 percent less pollutants than making phenol from petroleum. Another example is limonene. They promote inconsistent user interfaces. Users are forced to learn numerous systems in order to access different applications. Such a requirement is intimidating to the novice user, inhibiting to the typical user, and a waste of time for the expert. Multiple systems dramatically increase the effort required to realise the benefits of computer-based tools. Hence, they distract from scientific work and adversely affect productivity. 

Quite possibly the greatest daily irritant (and cost) in the operation of a typical test area today revolves around the cost of building test fixtures. Customers still hate to pay for them, and the creation of fixtures burdens the board shop with an entire manufacturing process that seems to add no value and that distracts from the main productive purpose of the factory. The only fully effective commercially available systems that require no test fixtures are flying-probe... 

There are some exotic chemical names here, but they should not distract you from the basic principles of reaction stoichiometry. The stoichiometric coefficients state that one mole of each reactant will produce one mole of each product. Bitumen describes a black or dark brown masticlike material that is thermoplastic in nature and softens upon heating. The sources of bitumen are petroleum or coal deposits. The natural product is commonly called gilsonite or pitch, a mineral formed by an old weathered petroleum flow at the surface of the earth that has left behind the larger molecules from the petroleum. A principal source in the past has been Lake Trinidad, a 445,000 m2 deposit on the island of Trinidad. Bitumen from petroleum or crude oil is called asphalt (qv). It is the material left behind after all the valuable compounds, eg, gasolines, have been distilled out of the cmde oil. The amount and quality of asphalt is dependent on the source of the crude oil used in the refining process. Some cmde oils have a higher content of asphaltic bitumen left after the distillation process. Bitumen from coal is coal-tar pitch. It remains after the valuable coal oils and tars have been distilled out of the coal tars produced by distractive distillation. Most industrial applications for bitumen products use asphalt or coal-tar pitch because the supply is more uniform and plentiful. 

As the flavour and odour of a soft drink or fruit juice are very important elements of a product they should be closely controlled. This is generally carried out by trained panellists who have been screened to ensure that they have an aptitude for this type of assessment they are often quality assurance personnel or workers from the factory. Sensory assessments should be carried out in surroundings where the panellists can concentrate without distractions.

It is also at this phase that the delicate natures of the lysergic molecules express themselves. While they are locked up in ergot or in seeds, these molecules are pretty stable, so long as the crop is kept cool, dry, and free from mold. Once they are released, they are prey to light, heat, air, and bad chemical handling. A clock begins to tick on the shelf life of your product. Once the extraction is begun, the chemist must consider himself committed to the task, and not allow himself to be distracted by other matters while the product spoils. 

There are two issues that need to be addressed in the context of these three trends. One is that it is practically impossible to fully unify labels based on a diverse range of criteria and the other is that even if this were possible, their use would be limited for two reasons. Firstly, some consumers may find it hard to engage with schemes that bring together many different, often complex issues secondly, a unified label may distract attention from critical, specific issues associated with particular products (BSR, 2008).
