Production processes input-output ratios

In order to solve the first principles model, finite difference method or finite element method can be used but the number of states increases exponentially when these methods are used to solve the problem. Lee et u/.[8] used the model reduction technique to reslove the size problem. However, the information on the concentration distribution is scarce and the physical meaning of the reduced state is hard to be interpreted. Therefore, we intend to construct the input/output data mapping. Because the conventional linear identification method cannot be applied to a hybrid SMB process, we construct the artificial continuous input/output mapping by keeping the discrete inputs such as the switching time constant. The averaged concentrations of rich component in raffinate and extract are selected as the output variables while the flow rate ratios in sections 2 and 3 are selected as the input variables. Since these output variables are directly correlated with the product purities, the control of product purities is also accomplished. [Pg.215]

The final element of the manager s job is to improve. This means that over time the firm must increase the productivity of each process. Productivity is measured as the ratio of process output to process input. For example, if a firm ordinarily produces 10 parts from 1 pound of steel in one hour, its productivity is increased if it can start making 11 parts from 1 pound of steel in one hour. However, the productivity measure must be used with care. Goldratt (1992) and... [Pg.27]

We all widely utilize aspects of the first law of thermodynamics. The first law mainly deals with energy balance regardless of the quality of that part of the energy available to perform work. We define first law efficiency or thermal efficiency as the ratio of the work output to total rate of heat input, and this efficiency may not describe the best performance of a process. On the other hand, the second law brings out the quality of energy, and second law efficiency relates the actual performance to the best possible performance under the same conditions. For a process, reversible work is the maximum useful work output. If the operating conditions cause excessive entropy production, the system will not be capable of delivering the maximum useful output. [Pg.155]

Mass balances of alternative routes in chemical processing can be compared using measures such as the E factor and mass index 5 The E factor (ratio of waste Peg] to product unit [kg]) is an output orientated indicator, whereas the mass index (ratio of all raw materials [kg] to the product [kg])is an input oriented indieator. These measures and the cost index Cl (currency unit per kg product) clarify the benefits and drawbacks of changes in synthesis design, i.e. the strong and weak points, which must be addressed [6]. [Pg.325]

The two main crops for making ethanol by fermentation are sugarcane and corn. The ratio of renewable energy output to fossil energy input is more favorable for sugarcane than for com. However, there are a few other value-added products that are obtained from corn-based processes. [Pg.16]
