Product design formulation

When a medicine is developed, the requirements of the patient are translated into an actual product (see Chap. 17). The qualitative and quantitative composition are chosen, as well as the pharmaceutical dosage form, the preparation method, the container and the accompanying information for the patient. Pharmacy preparations should have a pharmacotherapeutic as well as technically sotmd product design. Formulation, preparation method, container and labelling have to meet the relevant requirements. 

Where sodium sulfite is added as a component of multifunctional or one-drum products designed for smaller boilers, no cobalt catalyst is added because of the cobalt alkaline precipitation problem. Consequently, if the FW temperature is low this type of formulation is unsuitable because the sulfite requirement will be too high and the available reaction time too short. Probably a tannin-based, one-drum product would be more suitable (although here again there may be a problem because tannin-based products, unlike sulfite cannot be mixed with amines). 

In principle, problems related to chemical product design can be formulated and solved in many different ways. The objective here is to highlight some of those that have also been applied in the various product design case studies reported in chapters 2-15 of this book. Once a selection of ingredients is made, the work is transferred to the formulation laboratory to establish preliminary product design as well as prototype formulations. If the product manufactured at this level is to be used in humans, the manufacturing should be done at a GMP level.
