Processing body localization

Localized corrosion, another form of metal waste, generally occurs on small, confined areas of metallic bodies. Localized corrosion processes expand mostly by penetrating deep into the bulk of the metal, forming holes and cracks that may endanger the integrity of corroded objects (see Textbox 43). [Pg.216]

Thrombosis and Its Clinical Implications As a normal hemostatic response to limit hemorrhage from microscopic or macroscopic vascular injury, the body undergoes a process termed local thrombosis. Specific proenzymes and proteins, platelets, and calcium participate in this process. The end result is the formation of insoluble fibrin, which mechanically blocks the flow of blood through ruptured vessels.55 Thrombosis is usually counterbalanced by physiological anticoagulation and thrombolysis. Under normal conditions, the thrombus is confined to the area of vessel injury and rarely obstructs flow to critical areas. However,... [Pg.255]

Gene therapy consists of multiple biological processes in the body, the exact nature of which is in most cases still unknown (Figure 7.1-1). Gene therapy is initiated with the introduction of an appropriate vector (viral or nonviral) either into the body locally (direct tissue injection), into body cavities (e.g., peritoneum or cerebrospinal fluid), or into the bloodstream (systemic delivery). The vector needs to find ... [Pg.944]

The identification of polymeric grains as microreactors, in which the polymerization process is localized from the moment of grain formation and until the moment of their contact and propagation into a microheterogeneous polymeric body, has been carried out by sol-gel analysis [122] and thermometrical methods [1231 in studies of oligoesteracrylates polymerization kinetics. [Pg.114]

Specific advisory groups could be established, where appropriate, to oversee the process. These could include members of the governing body, local agencies and community provision. [Pg.90]

In most circumstances, it can be assumed diat die gas-solid reaction proceeds more rapidly diaii die gaseous transport, and dierefore diat local equilibrium exists between die solid and gaseous components at die source and sink. This implies diat die extent and direction of die transport reaction at each end of die temperature gradient may be assessed solely from diermodynamic data, and diat die rate of uansport across die interface between die gas and die solid phases, at bodi reactant and product sites, is not rate-determining. Transport of die gaseous species between die source of atoms and die sink where deposition takes place is die rate-determining process. [Pg.86]

Intermetallics also represent an ideal system for study of shock-induced solid state chemical synthesis processes. The materials are technologically important such that a large body of literature on their properties is available. Aluminides are a well known class of intermetallics, and nickel aluminides are of particular interest. Reactants of nickel and aluminum give a mixture with powders of significantly different shock impedances, which should lead to large differential particle velocities at constant pressure. Such localized motion should act to mix the reactants. The mixture also involves a low shock viscosity, deformable material, aluminum, with a harder, high shock viscosity material, nickel, which will not flow as well as the aluminum. [Pg.184]

Via the environment relates to the consumption of local produce close to a PVC processing plant and largely derives from default values on release to the environment the uptake via the environment is derived from the adult figures multiplied by four to account for a higher food intake per unit body weight. [Pg.40]

WASP/TOXIWASP/WASTOX. The Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP, 3)is a generalized finite-difference code designed to accept user-specified kinetic models as subroutines. It can be applied to one, two, and three-dimensional descriptions of water bodies, and process models can be structured to include linear and non-linear kinetics. Two versions of WASP designed specifically for synthetic organic chemicals exist at this time. TOXIWASP (54) was developed at the Athens Environmental Research Laboratory of U.S. E.P.A. WASTOX (55) was developed at HydroQual, with participation from the group responsible for WASP. Both codes include process models for hydrolysis, biolysis, oxidations, volatilization, and photolysis. Both treat sorption/desorption as local equilibria. These codes allow the user to specify either constant or time-variable transport and reaction processes. [Pg.37]
